Work Header

A princess and her other half

Summary:

Kit knows that the Wyrm is waking up, Elora and Willow have been clear about it. And she knows that an arranged marriage is needed in order to form strong alliances.
Still she is not happy at all to have to marry someone that she doesn't know just out of duty.
Well let's say that this is true until she meets the Princess of the Bone Reavers, but will Jade think the same?

Don't want to say too much in the summary to not create spoilers

It's planned to be a continuation of "No you can't. You can't Kit", but you'll need to wait few chapters to see the link :).
It's not necessary to read "No you can't. You can't Kit" in order to read and enjoy this one, but I'd be really happy if you can read it :)

Chapter Text

Kit had just turned 20 few months ago. She knew it was time for her to get married and to solidify a strong alliance for the future. Following what Willow had told them, she knew that the Wyrm was waking up and even Elora had felt it stirring. They needed to prepare for the battle, and she knew that her primary role in this fight was to create a strong alliance trough her marriage.

There were three opportunities to be considered: Galladoorn, Cashmere and the Bone Reavers.

Kit knew what was needed from her and she would fulfil her duty as it was expected, but still it sucked to have to marry out of duty instead of love with someone she had never met.

During her latest discussion on this topic with her mother, she had expressed all her frustration in having to marry out of duty and not for love like her mother had done. And in full Kit’s style, her frustration was expressed through a heated discussion with sharp comments and objects launched through the room. In order to try and calm her down, Sorsha decided to give her the opportunity to choose. For Sorsha each one of those 3 options was a good one with immense benefits for the battle ahead of them, so it was not her interest to push Kit in one direction or another, but she needed Kit to take a decision in the short term and ensure them a good ally before the Wyrm would be completely awake.

But how could she decide between people she had never seen? How could she choose her future husband/wife without haven’t seen them not even once? The desperation in Kit’s voice broke Sorsha’s heart, so she decided to let Kit go and visit each one of the three realms together with Elora and Airk and decide for her future consort.

That decision was exactly the reason why she currently was in a carriage together with Elora and Airk directed towards Galladoorn. Ballatine and a couple of other knights escorting them.

“Soooo.. let me see if I’ve got this straight. We are going to visit Galladoorn, Cashmere and the Bone Reavers and we have the full power to choose your future consort?” Airk asked for the tenth time.

“Yes, like I’ve been keep telling you for the past one hour and a half!” she was really starting to lose her patience at her twin.

“It’s lovely.. a quest to find your soulmate” Elora interjected bringing her hands over her heart and doing her usual love-is-the-most-powerful-force-in-the-universe expression.

Kit rolled her eyes ‘she is always overly romantic, it’s just a trip to find which one of those three is the less bad’.

“But, how did you convinced mom?” Airk asked incredulously, he was still stuck on the concept that Sorsha had let them go on a trip alone and with full decision power. Kit simply shrugged, she had no idea what convinced her mother but she was very happy for the opportunity.

“Wait! We can’t go there unannounced, It’s rude!” Elora said suddenly.

“Rudeness aside, it’s something that can put our lives at risk if we go to the Bone Reavers without an invitation, they’ll kill us” Airk interjected being quite concerned about his life, driving his hand over his throat.

Kit rolled her eyes again, it was incredible how low was the confidence they had in her.

“I've sent a letter to each one of the rulers to let them know that we are coming. I've told them that we will stay for a couple of days, and I've kindly asked them to have their heirs taking care of our accommodation. I've also informed them that they'll have princess Elora and prince Airk visiting them, while I'll be disguised as one of the Queen’s advisors”

“Disguised?” Elora asked perplexed.

“Yes, because you, dear sis (she pointed her finger toward Elora), are going to launch a camouflage spell on me” she concluded, proud of her plan.

“And what’s the purpose of all of this?” Airk asked, still not convinced about the plan. And Kit wondered how he could be his twin brother if she had always to explain every single detail to him.

“Regarding the accommodation it’s because I’m curious to see how they are going to treat their guests without the influence of their parents. It’s something that can tell a lot about their personality and the type of person they are”. Both Elora and Airk were looking at Kit stunned, she was really putting a major effort to make this trip work, thinking it through and preparing the ground. They were positively surprised that she was finally taking the topic of her marriage so seriously.

“..and for the camouflage, I want to have the opportunity to observe them freely.. usually royals are not considering the servants, so they will not pay attention to me. If they would know that I’m the princess, they’d put on a mask and behave in a different way to try and impress me, while I’d like to be able to spot who they really are” she concluded.

Airk and Elora exchanged a knowing look, finally Kit was putting her intelligence at work, and she came up with a plan quite well thought out. Airk smiled and patted her back while Elora reached out to squeeze her knee. Elora twisted her wrist and Kit’s aspect changed. “Hello Kat, our dear crown advisor..” Airk said laughing.

Now they were ready for this new adventure together.
