Behind the other row of washers, he hears Vickie whimper and Robin comfort her in whispers Dustin can’t hear. Steve paws at him again, and Dustin tries to be brave, the way Steve has always been brave before, never trembling in the face of protecting his friends, but his voice shakes, “Please, you have to be quiet.”
“Tuh,” Steve tries. His hand goes limp and falls into his lap. “Tr—come.”
The Demos jump onto the wall of dryers in the other half of the room, and Dustin screws his eyes closed and draws Steve in closer.
