Verso — the reverse of a masterwork held up to candlelight: colours faded, outlines muddled, just the sepia underpainting peeking through like an uncanny shell.

As The Paintress counts down the years on her Monolith, Verso tries different ways of easing the burden of his existence.

“What will you do when this is over?” Lune asks, looking out into the horizon from the shore, where they can see Lumiere.

“It’s hard to imagine an over,” Verso replies.

    Summary

"It turns out my mother is a god," Verso said, when he saw her approach. "And she never felt the need to tell her children."

As explanations went, that was a pretty good one. Demigods always caused problems.

"Is this going to keep happening?" Sciel asked. "You have to tell me if there's going to be a war. Wars are a very busy period for me. God-wars even more so."

Verso looked down and shifted uncomfortably. "I hope not, but Clea is… we're just trying to eliminate the Cult of the Writer for now. Then maybe look for more of us. Ones that don't try to kill us."

    "That sounds like a war."

    "A small-scale conflict," Verso insisted.

    Sciel rolled her eyes. "Semantics."

Verso smiled, then looked down. Rubbed the back of his neck. Shifted nervously.

    "What?"

"I'm sorry," Verso said, "About… all of this." He gestured to his body. "I imagine it isn't… natural, what I do. What I am."

On December 33rd, 1905, Death (or, as she prefers it, Sciel) meets an immortal in the process of discovering his immortality. Thus begins a 95 year long situationship.

Or, one time Sciel met Verso when he was dead and five times they met when he wasn't.

    Summary

“I swear if it was up to her, I’d be on bedrest for the next five months,” she replied, the pent-up frustration sending her hand flying through the air as she finally gave it voice. “She caught me carrying a sack of flour and I thought I’d never hear the end of it.”

He cast her an appalled look, though not for the reason she’d hoped. “A sack of flour?”

Julie rolled her eyes. “It was half-empty. And don’t you start, Verso. I’m pregnant, not terminally ill.”

Two conversations: one in the cellar, one in the glasshouse; one with Verso, one with Aline.

Or: a pregnant Julie must contend with the expectations of carrying the newest addition to the Dessendre family.

    Summary

Verso, a Parisian eccentric painter, arrives to Lumiere, a hidden Alpine village near Durance to heal his melancholia and acedia. He makes acquaintance with Reverend Father Noah, a respected and well-loved by local community priest with mysterious past, and two men form a genuine connection.
But the village is not what it seems, and neither are its residents. On the Night of Blooming Moon Verso gets a taste of something dark and ancient as he participates in an annual fertility ritual under watchful eye of Father Noah. Nothing is ever the same after this night, and Verso is possessed by desire to seduce the priest — or at the very least to know more about him.
First, he learns Father’s real name. It’s Gustave, and it tastes sweeter than wine on Verso’s lips.
