Summary
Verso — the reverse of a masterwork held up to candlelight: colours faded, outlines muddled, just the sepia underpainting peeking through like an uncanny shell.
As The Paintress counts down the years on her Monolith, Verso tries different ways of easing the burden of his existence.

“What will you do when this is over?” Lune asks, looking out into the horizon from the shore, where they can see Lumiere.
“It’s hard to imagine an over,” Verso replies.

Summary
"It turns out my mother is a god," Verso said, when he saw her approach. "And she never felt the need to tell her children."
As explanations went, that was a pretty good one. Demigods always caused problems.
"Is this going to keep happening?" Sciel asked. "You have to tell me if there's going to be a war. Wars are a very busy period for me. God-wars even more so."
Verso looked down and shifted uncomfortably. "I hope not, but Clea is… we're just trying to eliminate the Cult of the Writer for now. Then maybe look for more of us. Ones that don't try to kill us."
"That sounds like a war."
"A small-scale conflict," Verso insisted.
Sciel rolled her eyes. "Semantics."
Verso smiled, then looked down. Rubbed the back of his neck. Shifted nervously.
"What?"
"I'm sorry," Verso said, "About… all of this." He gestured to his body. "I imagine it isn't… natural, what I do. What I am."
On December 33rd, 1905, Death (or, as she prefers it, Sciel) meets an immortal in the process of discovering his immortality. Thus begins a 95 year long situationship.
Or, one time Sciel met Verso when he was dead and five times they met when he wasn't.

Summary
“I swear if it was up to her, I’d be on bedrest for the next five months,” she replied, the pent-up frustration sending her hand flying through the air as she finally gave it voice. “She caught me carrying a sack of flour and I thought I’d never hear the end of it.”
He cast her an appalled look, though not for the reason she’d hoped. “A sack of flour?”
Julie rolled her eyes. “It was half-empty. And don’t you start, Verso. I’m pregnant, not terminally ill.”
Two conversations: one in the cellar, one in the glasshouse; one with Verso, one with Aline.
Or: a pregnant Julie must contend with the expectations of carrying the newest addition to the Dessendre family.

Summary
Verso, a Parisian eccentric painter, arrives to Lumiere, a hidden Alpine village near Durance to heal his melancholia and acedia. He makes acquaintance with Reverend Father Noah, a respected and well-loved by local community priest with mysterious past, and two men form a genuine connection.
But the village is not what it seems, and neither are its residents. On the Night of Blooming Moon Verso gets a taste of something dark and ancient as he participates in an annual fertility ritual under watchful eye of Father Noah. Nothing is ever the same after this night, and Verso is possessed by desire to seduce the priest — or at the very least to know more about him.
First, he learns Father’s real name. It’s Gustave, and it tastes sweeter than wine on Verso’s lips.Tergiversi a praetus suis — those who fled from their pasts

Summary
The spectre is on the move again. It descends a step or two on the staircase. A sound similar to the tap of a cane rings in Verso's ears, but he's most certainly imagining it. What is real, though, is Renoir's outstretched hand. Its blackened fingers curl slightly, followed by the whole arm. The meaning this time is clear as day.
Come along.
His chest heaves with indecision. Then he finally rises.
----
Verso stumbles his way into the manor, where he finally gets the chance at a heart-to-heart with the man who will one day end them all.

Summary
Verso moved his hand out of hers and towards her stomach. Clea let him, curious, and watched as his hand settled on her suspenders. His thumb moved over the metal clasps, leaving a dull smear of blood in its wake.
Horror, sharp and ice cold, poured down her throat and spread through her spine. She had missed that spot. How did she miss something?
Verso moved his bloodstained thumb to his face and sniffed theatrically. "Blood," he murmured. "You've gotten sloppy."
The cold horror flared and turned hot. Clea glared.
Brat. She was going to finish what the fire started.
"I don't get sloppy," she hissed. She grabbed his hand and yanked it toward her again. It must've hurt, must've stretched at his scars, but he let her do it without protest.
Post-fire, Clea and Verso try to take care of each other.

Summary
After watching Aurélie tame a spirited young horse with gentle authority and a firm hand, Verso spends the rest of the day committing elegant crimes to orchestrate his own downfall.
--
He carried them both smoothly through the next sequence, letting the rhythm reassert itself – before altering it again. A step drawn out longer than necessary, requiring her to adjust rather than simply follow his lead.
To anyone watching, their dance remained flawless.
To a woman who danced for a living, it was absolute flagrancy.
He didn’t stop, guiding her into another turn where he held her just a touch too long before releasing her back into the pattern. Her gaze flicked to his, something deliciously dangerous flashing in her hazel eyes.
“Verso.”
A warning. Soft. Assertive.
“You are not amusing.”
Yes. There it is.

With Verso reluctant to tell him the truth, Gustave soon finds himself falling back into the same old patterns: a secret relationship, the hint of something forbidden, and the familiar pressure of a welcome hand around his throat.

“He was just as stupid. And just as blind.” Alicia's tongue flicked out to wet her lips. “Neither of you stopped to think about what I’d want—or that we’d have to go on without you. You’re selfish, Verso. And you—"
“—would make the same choice. In every life. In any life.” He smiled. She didn’t return it. “I won’t say I’m sorry.”
Alicia looked away. “You should have lived.”
“I decided otherwise."

Summary
At the moment of Gustave's death, the latent powers of an unknowing Paintress and the stubborn determination of an older brother desperate not to leave his sister behind combine and are just powerful enough to anchor Gustave's Chroma to the Canvas. With his body beyond saving, Gustave's disembodied Chroma reaches out for any anchor he can find—
—and winds up trapped in the same body as Verso Dessendre.

Summary
He seems comfortable enough sitting with his thoughts that he's not using the wine to get out of his own head, at the very least. Maybe he's just lonely. Verso does like talking, and entertains himself by climbing into her head when she's free enough to make merry. Julie is… strangely unbothered by that part of their routine.
The part that does bother her is the meta aspect: the routine itself.
Verso is there every night.

Faces — their complete absence is by now a stronger calling card for his paintings than the V. D. scribbled in the corner. It's a fact many comment upon, but few think about beyond the obvious joke, precisely the kind his friends make when they're a few glasses too deep.
