Summary
...
"The questions had been routine thus far, nothing that she hadn’t been expecting. The story that she had set out had already been corroborated by all relevant witnesses; now her motive and emotions were in the spotlight. Well, what they thought were her emotions. Eva recoiled internally at the idea of trying to explain to this man how it felt to run the world as it died. And beyond that… she was still a person, was she not? Surely she was entitled to some privacy. Some emotions that belonged only to her and the dead.
“Ms. Stratt,” the lawyer said, standing still and staring her dead-on in the way that meant he thought he had a particularly news-worthy moment ahead of him, “what exactly was the nature of your relationship to Doctor Ryland Grace?”"...
or: Eva Stratt has multiple homicide cases against her across the world after the launch of the Hail Mary.
(going ahead and adding MCD because, well, these are homicide cases, and they include homicides for major characters in PHM.)

Summary
"Abandonment has its own kind of grief trauma – a powerful grief universal to human beings. The grief can be acute – as when we go through the ending of a relationship, or chronic – as when we feel the impact of earlier losses and disconnection.
The natural folds in abandonment’s grief process fall into five universal stages: Shattering, Withdrawal, Internalizing, Rage, and Lifting. These stages overlap one another as part of one inexorable process of grief and recovery. They spell SWIRL which is descriptive of the cyclonic nature of this all-encompassing cloud of human emotion. Each stage affects a different aspect of human functioning and calls forth a different emotional response."

"“Robby’s being operated on in the OR. He fell from about four stories. They got him stable enough to go up, but he’s still critical.”
The words rang around Garcia’s skull for a moment, slipping against the edges as she struggled to comprehend them. Robby was in the OR? Robby had…
“He fell?” She said tightly, but they both knew what she was asking. Her free hand clenched the bedsheets as the line stayed silent for just a beat too long."...
or; Garcia gets a call from Lena explaining what she's getting into in the morning.

"“I’ll do it.” Jack said, pressing the crosswalk button, but Robby gave a harsh laugh.
“What am I, five? I can get my own damn keys. Besides--” he locked eyes with his friend, face serious-- “no offense, brother, but I know your leg must be hurting. Come on.”
He hated how Jack was staring at him, brows furrowed slightly and that slight tension in his mouth that meant he wasn’t pleased with what he saw. Robby felt another wave of annoyance wash over him, though it was accompanied by fear prickling at the back of his neck. Jack looked far too serious, like he was seeing the decision for the life or death one it was. He held his gaze, hoping he was maintaining his playfully exasperated face well, and he saw the small exhalation as Jack gave in.
“Fine. Be back in five, though, or I’m coming in.”"...
or; Robby jumps out of a window after the PittFest shift. The ED is left to try to put him back together again.

She can see Carl surveying Grace while he's distracted looking at her. He must be worried. Grace looks horrible, thin and washed out, sunken and sad. It's like all of his brightness faded with the sun. If only fixing this was as simple as fixing Sol.

Summary
He couldn’t take it anymore, Grace needed to sit. He plops right down onto the sterile flooring, knees up as he rests his arms across them, head buried. Biking that hard for that long, then running across the building at full speed really wasn’t a smart idea in his current condition. He might throw up. He’s been so nauseous lately.
Grace could feel Stratt’s eyes on him, looking, calculating. Evenly, she speaks again.
“…Your physiological state is affecting performance?”
Grace closed his eyes briefly.
“I said I’m fine.”
“You are not answering honestly."
“I’m just pregnant,” he said, emotion finally leaking through to his voice. Grace refuses to cry here.
A pause. Then Stratt speaks again.
“Does this impair cognitive function?”
“No,” he said, voice wobbling.
“Then it is irrelevant.”

Summary
I think everyone needs to hear someone say, “Nobody else will do. It has to be you,” sometime in their lives, even if it only happens once. Just once is enough. As long as you can feel sure those words were sincere, you can live through anything, no matter how painful.
Except Rocky isn’t the first person to say that to me, is he? Now that I think about it, I realize I’ve heard it before.
Stratt just phrased it poorly, that’s all.

Bookmarker's Notes
"And I, for my part, took it poorly. Rather, I refused to hear it. I didn’t want to be told I was so incredibly important, didn’t want to know how deeply I was trusted, didn’t want to have to shoulder the burden of those two facts. In those closing hours of the project, she must’ve hoped beyond hope that I would step up and do the right thing—she didn’t have to do me the courtesy of presenting that false choice, you know. She could just as easily have had someone ambush me with the needle in the hallway and that would’ve been that. It wouldn’t’ve made much of a difference to the endgame: both scenarios conclude with her standing over my comatose body, in the twilight period between one life ending and another one beginning, trying to come up with some action she could perform that would make the situation even an iota less painful, only to find herself woefully inadequate for the task at hand. Still, I suppose she did what she could—it’s common knowledge that hearing is the last thing to go before someone dies."
