It’s over. They defeated Chuck and saved the world. They’re free. There’s nobody left to control the narrative other than themselves. Everyone else is moving on with their lives.
Dean can’t.
Haunted by Castiel’s final confession and crushed beneath the weight of his own guilt, Dean throws himself into alcohol and research. He refuses to rest until things are right again. Until Castiel is back with them.
Along the way, he is forced to confront feelings that he’s spent a lifetime trying to bury, and he copes in the only way he knows how. Anger.It’s not a pretty journey, and things get way worse before they get better.

Their skill and family name a curse to those they hunted, Dean didn’t think there was much out there they couldn’t handle. With their dad hunting the thing that killed their mom, he and Sam fought the good fight. And that had been the status quo until he’s suddenly faced with an angel that swears he’s there to protect him but acts more like he’d prefer to eviscerate him on the spot.
When things go from bad to worse and its his brother’s blood that’s got demons popping out of the woodwork, Dean doesn’t know what to do – who to turn to. But if there’s one thing ingrained into him its this: protect Sammy, at all cost. So, when he finds himself relying on an angel that may or may not want to stab him, he figures he’ll do whatever he has to. And if by some miracle he managed to convince Heaven’s most grumpy angel that humanity was worth something, well…that was a bonus, right?

With a glance as they walk down the grocery aisle, Dean involuntarily lets out a soft, “Aw,” when he sees the way that Jack’s face is smushed against Cas’s shoulder, eyes shut and body relaxed heavily in the angel’s arms.
He can’t blame the infant at all for relaxing so easily in Cas's embrace. After last night, Dean can certainly attest to how comfortable it is.
TLDR: After one long year in the empty, Castiel is saved. Unfortunately, Dean finds himself still struggling to confront the feelings that both men are very well aware of, even though he now finally has the chance to be with the angel like he's dreamed of. Will a sudden curse placed on a loved one be the catalyst that forces those three words out of Dean after all?

After a vampire hunt went awry, Dean lost his memories. He forgot his time in hell, purgatory, and the soldier his father forced him to be. Monsters, angels, demons, and all these crazy creatures existed and Dean—well Dean…didn’t know how to feel about all that. His brother sounded like he spent one too many nights in a looney bin. The world sounded insane coming from Sam’s mouth. But Castiel felt real. Cas was there when Dean woke up. Always there when the panic attacks hit, sleeping in his room, and looking at him like he mattered. Dean drew the only conclusion that makes sense: they must be together.
Cas should correct him. He should tell him this was wishful thinking born from confusion and proximity from years of almosts. But Cas was human now and this version of Dean was softer and gentler than he’d ever known, untouched by years of trauma he buried deep. Who was he to ruin that perception? When Sam kept pushing to restore Dean’s memories, Cas found himself asking the question he never dared to before: Is the old Dean worth saving?
Season 9 rewrite. Amnesia fic. No Ezekiel.

On the TV, images of galaxies appear, one after the other.
“What are you sayin, Cas? That you have a god complex?” Dean tries for a joke, but the look on Cas’ face says he doesn’t find it very funny. To be honest, it had already begun to fall flat on the way out of his mouth.
“No,” Cas shakes his head, “it’s just...the way that I see you sometimes.” He pauses to look at Dean fully, eyes searching his. There's an ache in Dean's chest. “I forget you aren’t an entire universe.”

When Dean sits down to watch some bullcrap Discovery Channel episode with Cas, he doesn’t expect to actually learn anything. Except, with Cas explaining, he makes an effort to connect the dots.
