If he looks, Tommy can see long stretches of various fences, probably paddocks, once. He can't see any animals, though. They've been empty for a while.
Eventually, after a long wind in the road, they can see the edges of a city in the distance, standing in front of the setting sun. They're definitely not making it by nightfall, but they're hopefully not so far away that it should matter much.
