Chapter Text
“Do you see what our lives mean to them??? Gift baskets and Taffy!!!!” Vox spat out. His sneer rallied the crowd, and it was contrasted by the cheshire smile he was feeling inside.
“N-no!!!! That's n-not-! W-we dont- I-I-” sputtered Emily. She was on the verge of tears. The Joybringer of Heaven was woefully underprepared for such negativity.
The Sinners below her were nothing like Pentious. They were screaming insults that she hadn't even heard before. They were yelling at her. They were mocking her idea that she spent so much time on, and it was breaking her heart. ‘Is….Is this what sinners are actually like?’ she thought to herself in hurt disbelief.
Dark crimson eyes glaring up at her.
Misshapen forms cursing her.
Hate Hate HateHateHateHateHateHate-
The basket in her hand fell forgotten, as she put her hands over her ears in fearful desperation. “P-please stop!” She whimpered as the tears flowed freely. She wanted to crawl inward. She wanted to go back to Heaven. “W-we just wanted t-t-t-to help-” he hiccuped with every breath.
“Help???? Well isn't that convenient!!!!”. With a snap of his fingers, Vox replayed countless Exterminations on the holographic screens around him. “The Angels come down here, after we show them we can defend ourselves, and they think we WANT their help!!!! They think we NEED their help!!!”.
The crowd got more and more savage, as Sinners began to flash in and out of their full forms.
“J-jeez. This isn't any good” Abel gulped. The ‘Head Exorcist’ tugged at the collar of his robe. He too was unprepared for the hatred & rage being levied towards them. He tightly hugged his gift basket, as if it was a therapeutic object to curb his obvious anxiety.
Finally allowing himself to grin, Vox splayed his hands out to his side. Cables whipped about as electricity shot out in a display of charm and power. “Well what do we have to say to these Angels, and their pitiful attempts to lull us back into the status quo?”.
Once again, the crowd rallied further as their voices were a choir of malevolence and hate.
“FUCK THOSE ANGEL CUNTS!!!”
“SKIN EM ALIVE AND WHIP THE PISS OUTTA THEM!!!!”
“LETS RIP HEAVEN APART & BURN IT ALL DOWN!!!!!”
Sera’s teeth grit at the display. A spark of Heavenly might began to form in her chest. ‘The impudence. The gall of these…..these wretches!!!’. Her thoughts were consumed by frustration.
…And shame.
Not at having committed the Exterminations. But at having been so thoroughly mocked by these Sinners. ‘We came to them, tossing our pride & ordainment aside to improve relations with them. And they mock us? They…they make Emily cry???!!!’.
“S-sera” Emily whimpered, before she buried her face into Sera's chest.
The elder Seraphim balked for a moment, before her matronly instincts took over and her arms wrapped around Emily protectively. She looked down, and she could feel her heart breaking at the sight of her pupil and younger sister so emotionally broken.
The joy bringer sniffed pitifully; her lips quivering with tears pouring down her cheek. “Sera….I…I-I want to go h-home”.
Even Abel was biting his lip in conflict. He placed a hand on Emily's shoulder, but it was clear he was just as affected by the hatred the sinners were causing.
“Hm. Pathetic”.
Sera's head whipped in Lute's direction, and she immediately cradled Emily's head against her. “Lute!” She hissed, glaring at the stoic faced Exorcist. “What do you think you are-”
“I'm sitting back and watching you all wake up to the reality of our world” Lute cut her off. She took her own gift basket before she quickly tossed it at one of the holo screens. The basket burned on contact in a burst of electricity, before falling down onto the stage in a smoldering mess before Vox.
The Overlord was admittedly shocked by the bold move. Shocked, but not overtaken. ‘Tch. Looks like this hummingbird’s still got some speed in her’. Straightening his sky blue suit, he pulled another grin on his face. “Well well well. It looks like the so called ‘Exorcist’ is showing her true colors-”
“Pay attention, Joybringer”.
Being so thoroughly ignored made Vox’s antennas twitch.
Especially given the obvious unapologetic static laughter he could hear from backstage.
His hold on the crowd was firm, but he was losing the center of attention thanks to this bob-haircut Exorcist cunt. ‘Tch. If she's anything like the Princess’s winged pocket pussy, then it's no wonder she can't keep her mouth shut’ he glared up at her as she continued talking.
Lute cast her hand out to the chaos around them, as she flatly glared Emily's way. “These are the ‘innocents’ you wanted to help. This is what you wanted. This is what Adam & I tried to protect all of you from”. Her voice was cold, calculated, and confident. Despite the jeers of Sinners below growing, she flew closer to Sera as she met her eyes.
Sera could feel a rare intimidation at Lute's confidence, despite not saying anything.
“These are their true colors, Lady Sera. This is the demonic filth that the princess wants to pour into Heaven”. Her yellow eyes glared down at an unsettled Charlie, who herself was at her wits end at the worst case scenario.
The Princess of Hell grit her teeth, as the sheer look of superiority on Lute’s face gathered every possible prejudice Charlie knew of, in one simple look.
“She took on an unattainable goal, just to see if she could get mommies approval” The Lieutenant mocked. “Instead of staying in her lane & making her Hellhole better, she wants to make Heaven WORSE!!!!!”.
Lute's sharp words made Emily flinch, and Sera couldn't meet her subordinates' eyes.
A slow clap was Vox’s response, along with a roll of his eyes. “Sensational” he drawled dryly. “While I agree with you on the Princess's bleeding heart-”
Instead, Lute completely ignored Vox as if he wasn't there. “Look what this so-called ‘Redemption’ has gotten us!!!”.
“DID THIS BITCH JUST INTERRUPT ME AGAIN????!” The TV overlord screamed. Electricity coated over him, as his eye spiraled in rage.
“~Oooooh, looks like someone can't handle the stage all by themselves”
“Hmph. Serves his ass right for thinkin’ he could backstage us”
“I just do love any occasion, when Vincent can make a fool of himself in front of all of Hell”
“ALL OF YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!” He barked at Valentino & Velvette sitting backstage….with a cocky looking Alastor tied to his Vox-tek wheeled chair.
The two Vees & the Radio demon all seemed particularly taken with Vox's rage, as they gossiped together at the Media Mogul’s expense over a game of cards.
Casting her hand to the Sinners below, Lute bright her hand across her chest. “You can't make peace with Evil! No matter what the Morningstar's daughter tells you!!!”. With a glare to an infuriated Charlie, Lute grabbed the halo off of her wrist. “Tell me otherwise, lady Sera. Tell me anything you've seen today has shown you that letting this FILTH into Heaven is worth it!!!!”.
Sera said nothing.
What could she say?
Emily shaken, Abel silent, and Hell all but ready to demand their heads as compensation.
“Sera! No, please!” Came the cries of Charlie from below. Panic and exhaustion marred her face, as she was practically pulling at her hair. “Redemption is possible! Vox is- he’s only- don't let his lies-”.
“His lies???” Lute balked, as she flapped her wings in indignation. “You're the one who claimed that you had souls ready for this redemption, and yet you bring us threats and hatred from your people!!!”. Vitriol and hate was spilling from the Lieutenant Exorcists mouth. And just for a second, a very deep visage of loss was present on her face.
More than just from a soldier losing their superior
Greater than someone losing their friend.
And that visage of loss transformed into a twisted spiteful glare being sent Charlie's way.
“How convenient is it, that you've never taken credit for one of your demon’s being RESPONSIBLE FOR ADAM'S DEATH!!!!” she shouted. Her prostatic golden arm creaked loudly, as she clenched her fist so hard that the limb began to also bear the burnt of her loss.
Immediately, Emily's bloodshot eyes shot open as she tore herself away from Sera's grasp. “C-charlie!!!????”. The hurt and disbelief on Emily's already distraught face was palpable, as she floated over and stared at a flinching Charlie. “You said A-adam passed away! T-that you tried to h-help him before he d-died!!!”.
“Tch! She helped one of her playmates, by giving them the dagger to slip in Adam’s back!!!”. A look of unrestrained fury was on Lute's face, as she cast a side look to the technical ‘superior’ behind hers. “Just how much more betrayal can Adam's family take, before the Morningstar's will finally be happy?”.
The wording of Lute's statement made Charlie's eyes furrow in confusion. ‘Adams family?’ she thought, not understanding the connection. But any conclusions she could try and reach were cut off as she heard a noise of distress.
“Ngh!”
Looking past Lute, she saw the male Angel that she was unfamiliar with. Except as of this moment, he was a wreck.
The bags under his eyes seemed to have grown exponentially. His skin was even more pale than Charlie’s own. Sweat poured off his body, and he was hunched over as he clutched his head.
“I-I…no! I-I….I thought d-dad was….Ngh!!!!” Abel cried out, as he clutched his head. His marching hat promptly fell off his head, as his Halo finally righted itself. Abel’s eyes were shut tight, and his teeth were bared as he was lost in his current emotional storm.
As he pulled at his hair, Charlie was able to take notice of a scar.
A large, deep scar that was marking his flesh.
Hidden behind his blonde bangs, which were kept in place by his discarded hat, was a deeply black scar. It was darker than murky ink, and Charlie couldn't tell if it was fresh or healed. It seemed to throb with a presence, and she could see black veins sprouting from it onto his skin. She gulped, as just the sight of it made her all the more uncomfortable.
It seemed it was a mutual feeling, because Abel’s condition only grew worse. “No! D-dad I'm….I wanted to do more!!! I just…Argh!!!! I didn't understand why he was so jealous!!!” He cried out, as the dark veins pulsed in his head.
“Eh? What do you mean you wanna help me? Sorry kid. You're too young to help your old man out.”
…
“Seriously? Wouldn't you rather help your brother with the wheat and fruit?”
…
“......Ugh. Fine. You kids are gonna put your old man back into his nice comfy bed.”
…
“Yeah yeah yeah. Try not to look so happy, okay? C'mon. I'm gonna show you how I cut the fluff off the sheep. You're just going to watch this time, okay? The last thing I need is you getting scared again like when the goats made you run behind a tree”
…
“Ha! Can't be mad at me for caring about you, kiddo. Now get on your old man's back. It'll be noon in a few hours, so I gotta carry you quickly. Hang on tight! Looks like I'll make a farmer out of you yet, Abe—”
Whatever was causing Abel pain, only intensified as his breathing was erratic. He was hyperventilating, and he was lashing his head back and forth like he was on fire. “Dad! I told him that you loved him too! B-but he didn't….he didntGAAAAHH!!!! I CANT!!! P-PETER!!! PETER HELP ME!!!!”. Abel screamed out at the top of his lung, with his scalp bleeding black and gold liquid from how deeply he was clawing himself.
In a burst of golden energy, he formed an unsteady golden portal behind him and flew into it blindly.
The act shocked Sera & Charlie, who could only watch as Emily was affected by the state of her friend. “A-abel!!!”.
Charlie wanted to cry out to Emily, but her voice died in her throat. She felt a chill wash over her, as Emily levied a hurt and bitter glare her way. Without another word, Emily disappeared into the portal after the son of Adam before the portal disappeared in a shower of golden dust.
Everything that had happened made Charlie's knees finally give out. “Emily…..n-no” She whimpered pitifully at the loss of everything she worked for, and was left only with Sera and Lute nearby from her place on the platform.
“....AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!”.
The laughter of Vox only served to frustrate Charlie & Sera. They both could agree that the mocking of the Overlord was nothing short of irritating. The many eyes on Sera’s partial form grew as they bored holes into the Sinner, while Charlie's horns erupted in a haze of sulfur and Hellish magic.
“Ahaha..haha…ho man. That was so pathetic, it was practically a laugh riot” he chuckled, wiping a virtual tear from his eye. “Let's give it up for the so-called ‘Heavenly Angels’ everyone!” He smirked, as several clones manifested on the holo screens. They all erupted in applause, as the many sinners joined in laughter and jeered Sera's way.
Charlie pushed herself to her hooves. Her fists were balled, yet she couldn't even bear to try and form a thought.
Who was to blame for this?
Lute?
Vox?
Her father???
Her thoughts were a maelstrom of unsureness and negativity, and she felt the ever familiar beast of self loathing welling up inside her.
“...Do you see, Lady Sera?” Lute asked, holding the halo in her grasp. She had no insecurities or fatigue, and looked down at the Seraphim below her. “They can't change. They won't change. They don't want to become better. They want to make everything in creation worse”.
“That's not true!” Charlie bit back. “You saw the proof, Sera!”. Despite her words, she was feeling as weak as she had whenever she was mocked mercilessly by the sinners she had tried to help. “Sir Pentitous-”
“Was the exception, not the rule!” Lute snapped, swiping her hand in the air. “We tried to play nice with these sinners! We tried the Princess’s way of doing things! These animals aren't people! You don't give an animal therapy when it bites you! You put it down!!!”.
Lute threw the halo to the side, causing it to expand and form a brighter and sturdier portal than the one Abel & Emily left through. Lute slipped her helmet on, and glared down at the sinners with the same contempt-filled mask that all the Exorcists had. “Tell me, lady Sera. How many more of Heavens Angels are you willing to risk for one deluded girl's dreams?”. Even as her words were full of factual apathy, the pain of losing the center of her world, hung as a reminder of failure and sacrifice.
…
…
“I'm sorry, Charlie”.
The words sent another cold chill through Charlie, and she looked in disbelief at Sera's floating form. “W-wait! Sera-”
“No. No more waiting” she told Charlie, as she faced towards the portal. “Heaven will no longer risk itself by mixing with such an unstable realm”. There seemed to be an equal amount of regret and resignation in Sera's voice, as she looked at Charlie sadly. “There…there's nothing more we can do”.
‘No no no no no please no!!!!’. Charlie's mind was racked by panic. Everything was spinning, and she felt that all her progress was sent spiraling back leagues and leagues. “Ser-”
“I will…make efforts to ensure Sir Pentious may return to Hell, should he so wish”. With that said, Sera promptly turned and flew in the portal.
“....Ooookay, does anyone else have anything to say????? Noooo? Are we sure??” Vox asked with a faux sweetness on his face, before scowling Charlie's way. “Good. Because the next person that interrupts me is-”
“Count yourself lucky, Sinner filth!!!” Lute announced to all the demons below.
“YO0O//UUU FU€CCCCKI///iIING W!NG33D KCUNT!!!!!” Vox screamed so loudly, that his head began to glitch and partially blue screen.
“There he goes again.” Valentino chuckled, before he sucked his teeth with a frown. He dropped down his card, before he exhaled smoke from his cigarette. “Serves that buscadora de atención cachonda right” he bitterly mumbled.
The notification of Velvette’s stream subscriber count increased, as she was live streaming Vox's meltdown to her loving public. “Gotta say Val, I'm starting to feel glad we didn't march on stage with ‘Miss pick-me’ over there” she smirked, before drawing another card from the deck.
“It's as I've always said. Vox simply has nothing to himself, except a pitiful reliance on other people to back his spectacular shortcomings”. Alastor’s grin was present on his face, and he had his shadow put a card down on the table they sat at, due to himself being wrapped in cables. “Gin Rummy” he smiled confidently, as Velvette & Valentino groaned.
“~Fuck, you're better at this than Vox” grinned Valentino, before he began to reshuffle the deck.
Meanwhile, Velvette pouted as she flicked through her phone. “Shit, I lost. Now I owe my chat a maid outfit stream”
Continuing despite Vox’s tantrum, Lute raised her arms to her side as she glared down at the mob of sinners.
She held no fear in her posture, despite countless sinners glaring at her. Some even brandished Angelic Steel weapons cautiously.
“Everything up until now…has been a mercy. We've culled your population manually, because you haven't been worth the effort to actually try to eliminate your filth from Hell's red sands” she spoke proudly and with resolve.
However, instead of retreating to the portal Lute raised her golden arm to her mouth before she spoke in a low voice into the built in Heavenly communicator.
“Terry…..Come see the lands where Adam was taken from us.”
It happened in an instant.
Faster than Charlie, Vox, or any of the Sinners could have reacted to.
The portal that was behind Lute shot upwards, before exploding out into a massive display of light.
It warped itself, burned, and made the Pentagram in the sky disappear from the sheer amount of brightness.
And when the light receded into itself, it revealed….
A ring.
“...Okay, what the fuck am I looking at here?” Vox deadpanned. The sheer amount of surprises today seemed to absolutely ruin his vibe, and offset all of the preparation he had put into today.
But nonetheless, a massive orange ring sat in the air above the stage. It was likely larger than the entirety of the stage, and the audience as well.
The sinners below were gobsmacked at what they were witnessing.
“What the fuuuuuuck?”
“O-oh man. I picked the wrong day to stop shoving bath salts up my ass”
“Mon dieu-”
Even Charlie herself had no understanding of what she was witnessing. All she knew was that this ring….was wrong.
Wrong down to her core.
Because the ring was soon joined by another orange ring. The rings began to spin, as the inner ring spun opposite to the outer ring. A massive breeze started to kick up, as the rings whirled faster than a helicopter-
Before they stilled.
Everyone could only watch in anxious worry, until several massive blue eyes sprang to life alongside the edges of the rings. Sharp cobalt blue eyes began gazing around in different directions, all while crimson wisps of flames burst into existence around the rings.
Three massive pairs of brilliant white wings spawned, as they were still, despite their serene nature.
“Well….that's not good”. Valentino muttered, as his shades fell off his face. Even his nearsighted eyes could only stare in uneasy wonder at the monstrous winged set of rings.
“Ah!” Velvette gasped as she dropped her phone. She had tried catching the Heavenly object in the frame of her stream, but her phone immediately caught fire. It was now a smoldering pile of goop on the floor.
Alastor blinked owlishly, before his shadow spread out underneath himself and the two Vees. “Well, it's time we bid this gaudy stage play adieu!”.
With that said, he pulled the three of them into his shadow and teleported them away to a location unknown, leaving nothing but a table with a deck of cards behind.
An unprecedented display of Heavenly shock and awe was making Vox’s plans collapse under itself. He took a deep breath, attempting to bring attention back to himself and rally the crowd. “It looks like you can't teach an old bitch a new trick! If you think you can scare us, you've got that halo shoved far up your ass!!!!”.
But Lute didn't rise to the occasion or take the bait. She simply watched all of the sinners anxiously stir from the sight above them.
Instead, she snapped her fingers.
And then the sky burned.
A massive pupil-less eye sprang into existence within the centermost of the floating rings, as it carried a divine flame which caused the entirety of the crimson sky above Pentagram City to turn gold.
Everyone was knocked off their feet. Vox, the sinners, even Charlie herself at the burst of primeval power.
Every electrical object within miles of the Vees tower shut down, and every single cable burst into smoldering flames. Even Vox’s mechanical shark exploded as the metal warped and its components blasted into shrapnel.
“WHAT THE FUCK!!!??????” The Overlord screamed in rage. Unable to use his destroyed cables, he teleported himself to his feet despite the quaking ground beneath them.
Even Charlie couldn't parse out what she was witnessing, and from her place on her hands and knees she felt true fear as the blank eye was unmoving and ever present.
The screams of fear from the sinners was soon downed out, as the rings wings flapped and sent debris and bodies careening into the various buildings around the Vees tower.
But it didn't send them outwards.
It sent them upwards.
Sinners were sent upwards directly into the sky, as if the world was turned upside down. It happened indiscriminately. Some were sent flying upwards, screaming in terror, while others watched in horror. Even those with wings were helpless, as their winds were seemingly shattered under an invisible weight.
Charlie felt this same weight pinning her to the ground. “W-WHATS HAPPENING?!” she cried out, but nobody and nothing could respond to her.
Everything was in chaos, save for Lute. Her wings had long stopped flapping, but she was held midair as if gravity itself was supporting her.
Finally the center eye of the rings split open, and made a horrid squelching sound as it seemed to unwrap itself and blink in a reverse manner. A single blue pupil stared at Lute, before the rings began spinning again.
“Lute”
The voice was so overwhelmingly loud, that it was as if a lion was roaring in one ear as an elephant was bellowing in your other. Charlie had to hold her head to try and force away the pain of the agonizing volume, but she was only further horrified by the fact that blood had leaked from her ears and onto her hands.
“This is it, Terry” Lute spoke somberly, as even despite her own attitude, it was clear she was tempering the own storm of emotions within her. She balled both her fists, and motioned outwards toward the Sinners. “The city of Sinners. The filthy excuses for sapient beings who took Adam from Heaven. From us”.
Those words from Lute seemed to spur on this entity further. As it grew 10 times bigger, now eclipsing the Pentagram that formerly was visible above the city. The flames burned brighter, the blue eyes bored into the sinners who had disappeared into the boundless sky. The wheels were spinning so fast that they were a glowing blur.
But despite this, the eye seemed to narrow down at the land below.
“What was that you were saying...Cox, was it?” Lute asked, with an apathetic glare towards the TV demon. “Something about 'becoming a God', and 'leading these sinners to follow Lilith's dream'?”.
The intense pressure only seemed to compound further on Vox. He was forcing all the electricity he could muster through his being to keep from collapsing, but he was still glaring at Lute with a livid expression.
But even as his screen was cracked and his rage was apparent, he couldn't keep his limbs from shaking at the intense and biological fear he felt at the Throne eclipsing the sky above.
“Tell Me, Lowly Sinner”
The Throne Angel spoke, causing Vox to hear an agonizing vibration through his head.
“GAHHH!!!” He screamed out, as white blessed mercury began to pour out from the sides of his screen. His eyes were flashing gold and blue, as the mercury poured from his mouth and eyes. The pain he felt was utterly agonizing, as if he was being eaten by a cannibal one plastic spoonful at a time.
White hot flames began to eat away at the electricity keeping him afloat, and he collapsed against the stage as if he were a puppet with its strings cut.
Even Charlie was unnerved at the sight before her. She was having to inhale purposely just to keep from passing out from the pressure.
“W̴̥̫̋̋h̶̪̋̏a̷̟̣͐t̷̫̄͜ ̴̧̺͂̚Ḯ̸̢̙s̵̟͊ ̸͖̬͌I̴̡̿̉ẗ̸̰́̇ ̸͖̺̀Y̸̟̅ǒ̶̫ŭ̶̮͚ ̶͈̤̈́̄Ẁ̴̘̕i̸̛̬͌s̸̪͇͂̑h̴̙͋́è̴̼d̴̛̞̠͛ ̶̧͒Ṯ̶̋ö̵̘ ̴͖̑̓D̴̛͕̭o̶̼̿ ̶̳̽̾Ť̷̗͂ọ̸̺̓ ̴̦̌H̸̉͜e̵͕̕ą̸̧̈́v̷̩̍͆ē̷̤̒ń̴̲̱̓?̸͖͑̑”
These words made columns of holy light explode out throughout Pentagram City.
White hot beams would explode upwards into the sky, as they incinerated the buildings and eradicated the souls of sinners that were caught in them.
Charlie's last act before she lost consciousness, was reaching a hand out in futile empathy. Her head hit the platform she had previously stood on, with tears falling down her unconscious cheeks.
Meanwhile, Vox was bearing the full weight of both the Angel’s contempt. His claws dug into the stage, and his teeth leaked blood from how hard he was clenching them in rage.
“B̵͕̼͚̎̅̿͘͝͠e̴̗̝̯̭̫̔̊̿̅ ̶͍̹̟͕̀Ä̴̧͇̩̪̘f̶̧͂̅r̶̦͂̾̎̈́͘a̵̻̩͌͂̋į̵̖̜̿̾̈́͐̿͂͊d̴̯͎͓̦͚̓̀̽̇,̶̫̖̇̄̋̍̋̇ ̸̧̜̟̱̉͆̆̓͂̏͠L̸̨̪̥͇͖̂̾͒̂̈́̂ō̸̥̖̝͊̌ẅ̵̡͕̱́͆̅̒́̆̓ļ̷̜̖͂́̚̚y̶̰͉̠̻̔͂̌͑͜ͅͅ ̷̢͕̙̋̒ͅH̷͉͖̘̔̌̀͛̈́̚͝ẽ̴̹͌͘̚͝ĺ̴̜̲̗ḷ̴̡̼͍̱̫̯́̀̂̓ ̷̛̘̙̰̬̲̭̙͑̄̀͌͠W̷̡̜̞͕̅͑̈̑̽̋̿r̷̢͎̫͂̔̑̂͆̚͘è̶̛̝̦͙̀͌̑̐̚t̵͔̃̀̄͝c̷͚͕̫̃̄̈̏̚h̶̨̞̰̘̘̦́̌̈́ͅ.̷̞͖͙̫͔̥̀͗̋͊̄͜ ̵̛̛̰͙̏̃̉̾́”
But nothing could be done, and he could only feel the Gravity of his situation pinning him under the weight of his hubris.
