    Summary

In which Shane's relationship with Rose unfolds the way it does on screen, but Ilya's father dies right before All-Star Weekend 2017. They have yet to reconnect, but Shane wants to find a way for them. He decides to come out to his team, starting with management, that spring. The Montreal Metros make it clear that they will not be the league's trailblazer for queer players and terminate his contract. The Admirals lose in game seven.

In June, Shane goes to Wimbledon with his parents. Instead of a Swedish princess, he meets the CEO of the Swedish Hockey League and makes the decision to leave North America. As a veteran playing for the Växjö Lakers, Shane becomes a mentor to guys trying to go pro in North America. Guys like his linemate, Derek Briggs.

Years later, Briggs makes the Ottawa Centaurs out of camp. The Centaurs' plane makes an emergency landing, Ilya still sends Shane those messages, but Shane doesn't answer.

    (Or so Ilya thinks.)

    Summary

When Shane Hollander looks into the future he sees— not a flat sheet of ice, not that, not anymore, but something equally as empty.

His backup plan was always to go to university. He hadn't thought he'd ever need it, not really. Especially not near the end, when everything felt so certain. But his grades were good, his mom made sure of that, so when he woke up in the hospital he already knew what he was going to do next. But after?

There's a standard path people take, he knows, that comes after school. But when he tries to picture it, slot himself into the picket fence and the corporate overhead fluorescents, it disappears. Like it was never going to be real at all.

(Or: after ending up at a jazz bar to celebrate the end of finals season, Shane Hollander finds himself where he never thought he'd be— in the orbit of NHL superstar Ilya Rozanov.)

    Summary

    And there.

Through a break in the trees, there is a house. Wooden, old, the pale white paint of it greyed with age and dampness.

"I—" His voice comes out level, at least.

The man has tilted his head. "What? You want to sleep in your car?" He pulls his chin toward the dark interior of the house, a small gesture. "No. Come in. Is no trouble."

God hasn’t abandoned him yet, ha.

Shane Hollander's car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. The man who answers the door is charming, warm, and just his type. Ilya Rozanov is a very religious man. He has a lot to say about repentance.

    Summary

When Shane pulls away, he swallows audibly and the breath catches in his throat when he says, “There’s something you should know, too. Um, before.”
Ilya traces a thumb over his lips, pouts his own to show he’s listening. “Hm?”
“I’m a man,” Shane says, carefully.
    Ilya scoffs. “Obviously. I’m not—”
“No, no, I mean—I’m a man. You need to remember that. Because—”
“Oh,” Ilya murmurs. He brings his other hand up, settles it in the curve of Shane’s neck. “I understand."

A hockey player and the most beautiful man he's ever seen walk into a bar.
