Everyone else on the project had believed I was Stratt’s second in command. Especially at the end, I had handled a lot of the administrative stuff. I’d been—not her moral compass, Stratt didn’t need one of those; she had fully understood where each of her decisions fell with reference to multiple philosophies—but her point of connection to the human element of the project.
I had convinced her to come to the karaoke machine, show the project two minutes of humanity, and she’d sent me into space on a suicide mission.
I should have been a better HR rep.

Syl was right. There was something out there. Something moving, smooth enough to be reflective—unlike a thunderclast’s craggy carapace. It was moving in at a slow pace, as if dragging its feet.
A Shardhunter.
That sluggish, dragging movement meant something had to be wrong. Shardhunters were supposed to be—if not graceful, at least nimble. Just how drained was this Shardhunter, and what had happened to put it in such a state?
It was none of his business. He wasn’t a pilot, only a wall worker. There were supposed to be lookouts. Scouts.
Still…A year ago, Kaladin Hearthstone was a Shardhunter pilot. Today, he's a discard, branded a deserter, a single worker on the Origin Seawall.
That doesn't stop "the right thing" from coming to find him, or him from doing it.

Kaladin sheathed his knife, taking a weary step away from the man in the green Shardplate, only for the world to snap off cold. For a moment, everything was oddly bright, colors saturated, blurred. Something was happening. What was happening? Time slowed. He struggled for purchase against the slick essence of existence.
“Kaladin!” Syl screamed.
The man in the unadorned King’s Plate had his fist buried in Kaladin’s side.
Elit is a sore loser. When he throws a Shardplate-enhanced punch at Kaladin after surrendering, Kaladin has no choice but to use Stormlight to heal--in front of the entire Alethi court. Exposed as a Knight Radiant, Kaladin must navigate the treacherous waters of Alethi politics while keeping his past and its associated fears and cruelties from dragging him under.
