Summary
Figuratively, Steve tried stuffing all the bad memories into a box, taping it shut. The box reads "DO NOT OPEN" in black sharpie and gets shoved into the darkest, furthest corner of the attic to be forgotten and never opened again. The monsters are meant to be gone.
Problem is, it doesn't work like that.

Summary
Ok, so he's no Will Byers, but Steve thinks he can pretty definitively say at this point that he's got shit luck. Sure, he was born with a silver spoon and whatever, and he was loved by the smartest, strongest, bravest girl in the world (however briefly), and he's got a gaggle of preteens who look at him like he's Clark Kent and sometimes act like he's transformed into Superman, but still. Shit luck.
It happens on a Wednesday. His third day back at school since Billy kicked his shit in so badly that Chief Hopper was willing to leave his adopted super-child at the Byers' for three hours to drive him to the ER.

“No,” Steve rasps out as his world crumbles before his eyes. “No, no, no no no DUSTIN-“
Steve takes off faster than he ever has in his life, leaving the rest of the party in the dust as he desperately tries to make it towards his person. Nothing fucking matters anymore. Not the mission, not the kids, not Vecna. Only Dustin.
Because Steve can’t do this without him. You die I die. That’s the deal. And Steve is a man of his goddamn word.

Summary
“Good morning, Sleeping Beauty,” Dustin snarks. He rolls his eyes and heaves himself out of the passenger side of the bimmer, slamming the door behind him. He sticks his head through the passenger window, offering Steve a sarcastic sneer. “Have a good nap?”
Steve smacks his lips and swallows hard, but the odd metallic taste doesn’t leave his mouth. Dustin huffs at his lack of response and smacks the flat of his palm against the side of the car. Usually, Steve would reprimand him for that, tell the kid something about the paint job, or dents, but Dustin storms out of Steve’s sight before he can catch up to the situation. Steve’s slumped over the steering wheel, letting it press into the side of his face and his ribs, a radiating ache, but he knows the moment he moves, the pain will flare into something sharp and unbearable.

Never one to turn down free ice cream, Dustin lets out a heavy sigh, folding his arms on top of his open book and dropping his chin on them. “I had a fight with Mike,” he admits.

Steve is hurt. Bruises bloom across his face in glaring shades of purple, and similar patches of colour litter the rest of his body as well. It's dark now, but Dustin got to witness the severity of his injuries when his mom cleaned Steve up in the many places his wounds started bleeding. It was by no means a pretty sight— He looked quite dreadful, actually. And not just because of the many ways his body was damaged… There was something frightened, almost animalistic in the way Steve's eyes darted around the room, visibly fighting the urge to lean away from Claudia and the wet wash cloth.

“Oh, what now?” Dustin snaps, and Steve can just hear the eye-roll. He pointedly does not see it, because if he looks at the kid’s face with its fucking split lip and black eye, he’s just going to get pissed all over again, and that hasn’t exactly been helping with anything so far.
Steve grits his teeth, continues to stare at the ground as they walk, pretending it’s to make sure he doesn’t trip. “Nothing, we’re good.”
“Right,” Dustin says, so dryly that Steve wonders if he’ll ever hear any other tone besides that and anger from him. “We’re so good you won’t even look at me.”
Something snaps in Steve’s gut, that red-hot rage that’s been sitting there since Dustin showed up hours ago looking like a punching bag. “Oh, I’m surprised you care,” he said. “You’ve made it pretty clear you don’t give a shit about what I have to say.”
