She’s watched so many events play out before her eyes, seen her own limbs perform actions that she would never imagine herself capable of, and it’s a struggle to absolve herself of blame. That doesn’t mean she’s not trying, though. She’s trying her hardest to distance herself from that which she wasn’t, from that false version of herself, all while she does her best to come to terms with everything she has now. Because now, she has a family, in the form of the same robotic entertainers that her hands reprogrammed, and the little child that her arms tried to kill. It’s a struggle. She still wakes up some nights and screams, she still flinches at the very sight of a knife, and she can’t bear to wear gloves. But none of that means she’s going to stop trying.
This was the original version of “For We are One in the Same,” published on January 6th of 2022. It was the second installment of the original “Three Stars Shine in thy Night Sky” series, following Vanessa’s struggles as she recovers from being mind-controlled, dealing with guilt, blame, and self-hatred. With a reboot-slash-rewrite of the series underway in the background, I chose to move this work to The Vault.
