"Damian, are they making ‘your mom’ jokes?”

“I feel bad for Wayne. If some whore dumped her creepy kid onto me I'd just leave the country.”

    “Yes,” Damian says. “They are.”

    Summary

When something alien crash-lands in Gotham, Batman is not concerned.

When Superman calls it a harbinger—a creature that feeds on grief—he is.

It’s alone. A juvenile, separated from its pack. It refuses every attempt at contact.

Red Hood fails. Red Robin lasts longer. Others have already tried.

    Robin is sent last.

Inside the containment crater, Damian finds something that responds—not to authority, not to strategy, but to absence.

Harbingers do not hunt. They feed on what remains after loss.

Damian has never lacked for that.

    “You’re afraid,” he said.

The harbinger’s lips peeled back in a soundless warning. Spines rose higher. The growl that followed was low enough that Damian felt it in his ribs.

    He did not flinch.

“Yes,” Damian added, quietly. A reply to an unasked question. “So am I.”

    Summary

From his spot squished between the two metal boxes, he heard a pair of feet land on the roof. Trying to silence his pitiful sobbing proved to be useless as the stranger took a sharp inhale before speaking.

“Are you okay?” Whoever spoke sounded young. Perhaps a year or two younger than him.

Damian was unsure of how to respond, his throat had long since closed over. He swallowed thickly before uttering out a single word, “No.” He wasn’t sure why he admitted that.

    or

Damian suffers a heartbreak and deals with it poorly. The Batfam is no help at all.

Oh. And the Batfam kind of sucks. Oops.
