Summary
Dennis wakes in the middle of the night to some noise or shift in the air. Robby's home is already unusually quiet to Dennis, so much so Dennis has trouble sleeping after years of surfing couches, short term rentals in cramped, dormitory-style rooms, his car, and the occasional motel.
He doesn't move, trying to figure out what's different, if something is missing, like when the power goes out and everything feels strangely silent. He runs through his mental checklist: he turned off the oven, checked all the windows, locked up tight, and armed the security alarm. Dennis hasn't forgotten anything.
Dennis doesn't know how it feels to be abandoned — his family still clings to him, even though he's tried for years to shake parts of them off — but he does know what it's like not to feel worthy. To be in pain, to be afraid, to not know if the one thing he needs most is also the thing that'll end up killing him.
Robby comes home.

Summary
Robby swallows hard, making Dennis shout. It’s too loud, it’s too much, Dennis readies an apology but Robby’s looking up at him with the opposite of a reprimand. If Dennis didn’t know better, it would almost look like begging. Robby grinds his nose against Dennis’ pubic bone and Dennis realizes he’s waiting for permission.
“That’s good. Take—take a breath.” Robby does. Dennis didn’t expect the breath to sound so much like post-intubation. Relieved, desperate, terrified.
Robby clears his throat. “This might have been something else I learned on sabbatical.”

Summary
That first day, Robby had decided that, for longer than Dennis probably wanted this to last, Robby would helplessly leave his door open—for him to come unannounced, to come every day, to roll in the sheets and to linger, to place his things among Robby’s and lose sight of them, to give Robby the joy of discovering one of his sweaters, or one of his books, or one of his handwritten notes when cleaning out his closet before Pesach: unadulterated, tangible proof of him. Proof that he was to come back, proof that he was to stay.
Naturally, Robby told none of this to him.

Summary
He always looks nervous. Less so than he used to, definitely, but there is nothing Whitaker’s growing professional confidence can do for his face. He just looks like someone who is about to faint dead away with anxiety at all times, eyes huge and hair waving timidly over his pale forehead. When he smiles, he looks almost… he looks different, but he’s not smiling now. He’s staring at Robby as though he thinks one of them is about to explode.

“Here to talk? Tease him? Skin him alive? All of the above, in that order? "What do you want with me, Kayne?"”
Going out for the evening with Kayne is strange enough for Arthur, but growing to understand him is stranger still.

Summary
Dennis throws down his phone and says, “Don’t call them? The people who just want to help you? Don’t call the place that you were going to just, just abandon all by itself and not even think twice about how the department would survive, the only place that really knows you, that understands you and you were just going to leave me?”
Robby’s eyes go liquid. He covers his mouth with his hand.
“It,” Dennis says, too late.

Summary
“I’m fine.” Whitaker’s mouth turns downward. “I just – just didn’t really think you were coming back.”
The scoop slips out of Robby’s slackening grip and bounces off the counter, coffee grounds spilling everywhere. “Fuck,” he curses shakily, casts around for a cloth, a paper towel, anything to try and clean up the mess. Anything to give him an excuse not to look Whitaker in the face.
“Sorry,” Whitaker says, unhappily, and Robby has to glance up after all. “Sorry,” Whitaker says again, “I shouldn’t have – “
“I wasn’t sure I was going to come back either,” Robby says, feels himself trembling with the weight of the confession, and Whitaker’s shoulders drop even lower than they already are.

Summary
The first couple of dollars that the machine ate up without remorse were an annoyance, something that made Dennis sigh and unzip his wallet without thinking about it to try again. By the time that the vending machine had eaten seven whole dollars, in coins, and Dennis didn’t have anything to show for it, he was close to thumping his forehead against the cool glass and hoping he could derive some sort of enjoyment or nourishment from simply just looking at the colourful packages as they remained firmly in their coils.
~
5 times + 1 that Robby buys something for Dennis and makes him feel like he's about to keel over, right there and then.

Summary
When Dennis agrees to house-sit for Robby, he’s expecting three months of quiet and an excuse to avoid everything he’s been trying not to think about.
Instead, he finds Robby still at home, exhausted and overwhelmed, taking care of baby Jane Doe.
Dennis offers to help—just for a few hours, just until things settle—but it’s easier to stay than to leave. As routines form and walls come down, he keeps finding reasons not to go, until what started as something temporary begins to feel dangerously close to a life neither of them ever planned.

Summary
The door creaks, and the rooftop suddenly feels terribly small, exposed and stifling. Footsteps echo off the few walls and a presence appears before him, an achingly familiar boot nudging his own as it slides to sit beside him, worn soles scraping against the concrete.
Dennis doesn't look up. Maybe if he stays here, in the empty corner of the universe that exists between his chest and his knees, the presence will eventually disappear and leave him here to wallow. There's no point in saying anything anyway. He can't deny his sorrow. His grief is so vast, so palpable, that he's sure one could smell it, taste it in the stale stairway air that he left trailing behind him.

Summary
“Holy shit,” Santos says. “There’s a baby priest in triage.”
-
Dennis Whitaker, in his last year of seminary, is delighted to be assigned to a rectory in Pittsburgh, and to the hospital chaplaincy that comes along with it. Finally, he's out into the world, where he can be of real use.
Slightly less welcome is Doctor Robinavitch, the senior attending of the ER, who seems to resent Whitaker's presence to the point of deliberate avoidance, even though the man is coming apart at the seams and could clearly use a friendly ear. Still, Whitaker is certain he'll find a way to make the most of the last twelve months before he's ordained.
It's just that lately he's started to have the strangest dreams.
Or: Dennis Whitaker and Michael Robinavitch's lovestruck, sacrilegious year of magical thinking.

After the shower, Dennis lays in Robby’s bed, lets his wet hair soak into a pillow he’d been fucked against god knows how many times before. Dennis breathes in deep, and checks his phone. The text shows a telling little ‘read’ stamp and nothing else.

Summary
The defining truth of his life is, people leave.
He was a naive boy who wanted to believe in something larger than him, so every fucked up thing that happened to him meant something. So that every person who left, walked away, had some higher purpose elsewhere.
He knows now, the reality. That he's just easy to walk away from. That people don't stay for him.
Until Whitaker.
