“Look at that,” Stede said softly, and Ed did. He looked down at the scrap of silk he’d carried in his pocket for the last twenty-some years, and how it was now folded neatly into a pocket square, probably the way it was always meant to be.
“You wear fine things well,” Stede said, looking at Ed as if supremely pleased with himself, and he was beautiful, so fucking beautiful in the moonlight.He let out a little huff of a laugh, all he felt capable of, while his mind battered him like waves on the side of the ship. Nothing in his life, not one fucking thing, had ever prepared him for this moment. Nothing had ever been soft. He’d been chasing treasure for his entire existence, and he really, honestly thought that, fuck it all, he might have found it. The softness, the fine thing he’d been hunting his whole life, might be standing in front of him right now.
And Ed had always been a greedy bastard. He wanted more of it, all of it.
So without allowing himself a moment to think, he leaned forward and caught Stede Bonnet’s mouth in a kiss.

“Sometimes, the moon looks so pretty on the ocean I cry,” Stede admitted, looking across the room at the silk curtains that put his books to bed each night.
There was a fire crackling low in the mantle, casting strange shadows across the floor and wall. It crackled halfheartedly, trying to sound its best against the crashing, unending beat of the waves against the side of the ship. The wood of the hull creaked and groaned like a great beast made of dry bones stirring into life out of the wet sand. A low fog of smoke settled along each crease of Stede’s quarters, smelling mostly of the thick, sour scent of tobacco with just a hint of the musky clean earth smell of cannabis.
Edward sat still as a rocky cliff face in the chair just in front of the fire, the long stem of his pipe held a smoldering flame of lighthouse spark amongst the fog.
“Fuck, man,” Edward whispered, rolling each vowel quick and stucco with his accent off his tongue. “That’s fucking beautiful, mate. You oughtta write that down.”

It would be strange, foreign. But it might be exciting and a tad scary. It might even involve opening oneself up to another to find your own freedom, to find yourself in the untamed waves and vast oceans with its dangers and beauty.
Stede thought he would find it in pirating. He sort of did, in a sense. Because he had found himself. He had found himself in Ed.

This is a quintessence of their history, intended to show that every coin has two sides, though love may not always be enough to save someone who doesn't want to be saved.
I'd like to say a big thank you to FrozenBrownie, without whom this story would have remained as a headcanon, but she gave me enough motivation to write a whole fanfic. It's still not even half as good as I wanted it to be, but maybe not twice as bad as I'm afraid it is, so enjoy!
