    Summary

    I am happy.

Ilya tells himself this every morning and every night. He tells himself this in the car on the way to see Galina. He tells himself this when Shane scores a hat trick against Montreal and kisses Ilya at center ice. He tells himself this when the Centaurs break the Presidents’ Trophy curse to win their first Cup ever.

I am so, so happy, Ilya thinks, because maybe if he says it enough times, if he just wishes hard enough, it will finally be true.

    Summary

“Ilya–” Shane breathed, high and wheezy. “You can’t– You can’t leave me! Please, God, please, don’t take him. Please, please, I can’t lose– I can’t–”

A blaring alarm yanked him out of his panic like a fish out of water. He shot upright, flailing his limbs that were caught in something soft. Blurred splashes of colour steadily painted a picture of a bedroom he’d recognise anywhere. It was brighter now, light pouring in through partially shut curtains. His breath was heavy and he struggled making sense of how the hell he’d ended up in bed when just a moment ago, Ilya had–

“Hollander.” Ilya slurred, narrowing his eyes at him. “Turn that thing off.”

Or, Shane is stuck in a time loop that resets whenever his fiancé dies.

The ash from the end of his cigarette missed the ashtray and landed on his arm. It stung, enough to drag his attention back to the present. He brushed the gray flecks from his arm, but paused, marvelling at the sting it left behind. It felt like control. He stared at the cigarette, slowly burning out in his hand.

Taking a deep breath, steeling himself for the impending pain, he quickly jabbed the hot cherry into the meat of his arm.

    ----
Or, what if Ilya had another reason for loving cigarettes? It gets worse before it gets better (as with all mental health).

    “Maybe you don't have to-”

“Uh-uh. No backtracking now.” Hayden pointed a finger at him. “If you tell Shane, fantastic. Would love that, quite frankly, but until you do, I want those goddamn pictures, Rozanov. Am I clear?” Ilya wanted to make some quip about Pike trying to get a different kind of picture out of him, but given the circumstances... He just nodded. “Good. My kids tragically love the fuck out of you, so figure this out.” Ilya nodded again. “Alright then.”

Silence followed. Ilya eventually got up, and Hayden awkwardly walked him to the door.

“Ilya,” he said, surprising him with the first name. “I know what I say doesn’t particularly matter, and I am mainly just a fail-safe for this situation, but…” He opened the front door and clicked his tongue. “For what it’s worth, you’re a good guy and don’t deserve the shit your brain apparently puts you through.”

    "I'm a married man, Pike."

    Or

Ilya’s depression shifts into some self-harming tendencies, despite how well he can justify most of it. An unexpected cavalry comes together.

(AKA I found a story filled with sex and decided to hone in on my other favorite things: mental health and complex family dynamics)

    Summary

"Hayes!" He calls while he knocks loudly on the door. "Ilya!" he adds, just in case.
Wyatt opens the door a minute later. Shane can't help but chuckle. He's still wearing a costume, one that Shane doesn't recognize, and his shirt is stained with something that stinks of really strong alcohol. His hair is sticking up in all directions and he's squinting. "Hollander, what the hell."
"I could ask you the same thing," Shane crosses his arms, taking a look inside Wyatt's hotel room. Ilya doesn't seem to be there, and the anxiety starts reaching his heart, turning its beating erratic. Shane's mostly annoyed, if he's being honest, but there's this feeling twirling in his gut. He doesn't like not knowing where Ilya is. "Where the hell is my husband?"
    Hayes blinks.
    "What?"

Or, after a bad depressive episode and a terrified confession, Ilya made a promise to his husband. He swore he would never, ever leave him. And he'll be damned if he doesn't keep his promise, even if he has to fight strangers, jump off a moving car and cross the whole Nevada desert. He will get back to Shane, even if it's the last thing he does.
