Summary
It is a sweltering summer day when Sakura Haruno first meets Kakashi Hatake. It was in another life, too– in an Academy classroom whose stuffy air felt like a metaphor for thirteen year old Sakura’s soon-to-burst temper.
In that lifetime things started out complicated. In this one, it doesn’t. Instead, it begins with the tinny sound of the Harunos’ Bookstore front door opening, and twenty-five year old Sakura Haruno sneaking the book she was reading into the front desk. -

Dave Strider is still human, contrary to all the reality-destroying, time-bending bullshit that has occurred to him in the past few weeks (Months? Years? It’d be hard to tell even if he hadn’t been jumping from timelines like it’s running out of fashion). Therefore, as a human, he still subscribes to those pesky human past-times, such as eating, drinking, and sleeping.
He manages the first two quite well. Sleeping is where he encounters issues.

“Friend of yours?” Billy asks.
“He’s my classmate,” Graves says. She stares down at Apollo’s body, a little dazed. “Or, well. He was.”

The wise ones know: fires can warm and not burn; and rivers, if given strength and permission, will carve the land.

The Drifter snarled in response and swung out at where he guessed the other’s torso would be. There was a tearing sound, a mix of cloth, meat, and something unnatural, before the hand on his neck released him. He immediately whirled, teeth bared and claws at the ready, only to find the Doorman merely adjusting his cuffs and affixing him with an unimpressed raise of his brow. There was no sign of damage on him, as though the wound that he had felt had never existed at all. Bastard.
The Drifter learns what it feels like to be hunted.
