    “Our friends are being mean.”

Will jumps as El lets herself into his room and drops onto his bed. She doesn't look at him, arms crossed and frowning up at the ceiling.

“Umm. Hello. I see you are upset so I won’t complain about the not knocking thing. Again.” She blinks and finally looks over at him with a small pout. “Sorry.”

He shakes his head, smiling fondly, “It’s fine. Why are our friends being mean? What did they do?”

El lets out a puff of air and returns to the staring contest she had been having with the ceiling.

“They are being rude to Steve.”

    Summary

    Three shots ring out.

Steve hears them before he feels them; a warm, wet pain burning in his torso, intolerably excruciating.

There’s a bundle of squawks and screams, outbursts of panic and anger, and it’s only when Hopper falls forwards to take Steve up into a slightly rough, protective hold, does he realize that two of those shots have lodged themselves in his own flesh and bone. (Realizes that he’d moved, instinctively, to shield El, despite never having spoken to her, who’d the gun had been so precisely pointed at, aimed for.)

Steve Harrington watches his own blood pool and trickle over a series of hands pressed against him, small and large, soft and rugged, and for a moment, wants to stay like this. He can’t.

    Summary

“What are you thinking about?” Jonathan asks him quietly. The other still sounds nervous, rightfully so, but the only thing Steve wants to say is: you. He doesn’t.

For a brief moment, their fingers lace underneath the table. He thinks about how this isn’t fair to Jonathan, how fiercely the other had wanted to tell Hopper he wasn’t going to find a girlfriend because he had found Steve; how there probably wasn’t going to be grandchildren. Jonathan never has and never will like confrontation, but he is so endearingly loyal to those that he loves that sometimes Steve’s not sure how the other manages to be away from his family most of the year. Jonathan told him he loved him in October. He knows that same loyalty now extends to him. Instead Steve says, “The cheesecake for dessert,” and Jonathan smiles earnestly at him, laughing.

Steve knows his own selfishness needs to end.

He has no reason to be this flustered over a wink. Over a pair of stupidly pretty magazine cover eyes staring at him, specifically at him.

    Nope. None at all.

(Or: The Byers-Hopper family runs a coffee shop, and Jonathan is the one manning the counter when a storm rolls in— said storm being Steve bringing the Party over for some post-game pastries.)

“That day I came over,” Steve says. “You acted like…like you thought you knew every possible thing I was thinking about you, or your house, or whatever.”

    Jonathan doesn’t say anything.

“Do you want to know what I actually thought?” Steve says.

Or: Steve visits Jonathan's house once in 1982, and then another time in 1986.
