Summary
Dean and Castiel understand each other more than anyone else. They misunderstand each other more than anyone else as well.
After Cas is nearly killed by Ramiel, Dean is coming very close to acknowledging that he wants something more from Cas than friendship. Cas, however, feels the weight of his responsibility very heavily. When Dean asks Cas to stick around longer, Cas says he needs to keep looking for Kelly, leaving Dean feeling dejected.
But Cas agrees to help out on one more hunt before he leaves. Neither him nor Dean realize that the monster they're after can make their worst nightmares come true.
OR: Dean thinks Cas is killed. Cas is there to witness the aftermath.

Summary
“There was a time you kinda liked me. I miss that.” Chuck muses. His words trickle cool over Sam’s senses like rain from above. Sam shivers, the weight of Chuck’s hand on his head as heavy as the weight of the ocean—and he’s stuck at the bottom, unable to breathe as it crushes the very air from his lungs.
“T-too bad.” He manages to choke out.
He feels Chuck’s fingers dig into his scalp, hard at first, and then the force melts away to a soft carding, the digits slipping through his hair like gentle praise. It tingles over his skin and zaps down his spine in a way that’s achingly familiar. The faster his blood rushes south, the more dread rises up inside him.
“Yeah. Too bad.”

But, first, you gotta put everything back the way it was,” Dean continues, and this, this is why he’s Chuck’s favourite. Even at his lowest, he’s still making demands. “The people, the birds, Cas. You gotta bring him back.”
Even at his lowest, Dean still lets himself hope for something.
It’s fascinating.
“We're surrendering,” Sam finishes their little speech. “We're giving up.”
Chuck nods, as if he’s thinking it over.
But the eager glint in his eyes gives him away.
“Okay. Dean, kill Sam.”

Chuck takes the Winchesters up on their offer in 15x19. Dean, Cas, and Jack deal with the fallout for their relationships. It gets worse before it gets better.
