Summary
Erwin wants to be a hero.

Frankfurt: Abandoning their solitary lives, ghouls have united to an organisation ─ the PPO, which integrates them into human environments to maintain the safety of their people and expand their power.
Fed up with the strict supervision, young trainee Levi Ackermann breaks away from the organisation with his foster sister. On their escape, they are separated by agents of the PPO, which is why Levi is in desperate need for help to find her again.
Into the picture comes Detective Erwin Schmidt, who is investigating a mysterious murder related to paranormal activity. His morals are tested when he finds himself forced to work with the unpredictable ghoul, who happens to know answers to his questions, of which some have plagued him for life.
Two people who could not be more different have to get along to fight a mutual enemy ─ and realise, they might have more in common than they think.

BRD, Sechzigerjahre: Obwohl Levi es aus Dresden in den Westen geschafft hat, ist er unglaublich ernüchtert, wie wenig ihm auch dort das Leben bietet.
Als ihm ein mysteriöser Mann ein unschlagbares Angebot macht, geht er dementsprechend darauf ein und unterstützt ihn bei der Wiedereröffnung eines alten Cafés, das als Geldwäscheapparat für lukrative Deals mit dem Schwarzmarkt im Osten dient. Fortan ist Levi Erwins rechte Hand bei sämtlichen Schiebergeschäften ─ und vielleicht auch sein Verbündeter im Kampf gegen das Unaufhaltsame.
Hin und her gerissen zwischen Misstrauen und der Sehnsucht nach Nähe beginnt Levi, mehr und mehr über den Menschen zu erfahren, dem er nun sein Leben widmet.

“Okay,” Levi murmurs, head down at her sketchbook. “Damn, have some patience, woman. I’m still working on it.”
She is drunk with summer and sunlight. She wants to seize fistfuls of the sky and eat them.*
Levi's been spending her summers in the small coastal town of Rose ever since she was a kid. She always goes to the same rundown store there to buy the same things, always walks the same cracked roads to go home, always swims in the same boiling-hot ocean. She is bored out of her mind stuck in the cycle, even though she doesn't do anything to change things. One day, Erwin arrives.
