Simon and Kieren are adjusting to life as a couple. They're doing the normal things like trying to have nights out and coping with sharing a bedroom at the Walkers' home. Simon's brooding nature makes it easy for him to keep secrets, secrets that Kieren is determined to uncover.

At the present moment Kieren Walker was less than happy about his life. His on-again off-again boyfriend Rick had just been deployed to Afghanistan leaving Kieren defenseless against Bill Macy, who would like nothing more than to see Kieren go down in flames. With half the town of Roarton against him, his supportive yet apathetic parents telling him that things will get better, and the undiscriminating aggression of the high school masses, even the impermeable cheer of his best friend (forever) Amy can’t lift his spirits. Then he walked into Simon Monroe’s classroom.

Summary
Several months after the tragic events during the Beating the Bounds march, Kieren Walker’s second life is beginning to look up.
He is moving into the bungalow with Simon, the Victus initiated Roarton Protection Service has now been virtually disbanded, his sister Jem has a new boyfriend who was not in the Human Volunteer Force during The Rising, and no more incidents involving Blue Oblivion high rabids or attacks by the Undead Liberation Army have occurred.
Kieren is finally able to live life in Roarton as an openly Partially Deceased Syndrome Sufferer, not having to hide behind cover-up mousse and contact lenses, but there is a shadow on the horizon. With new and old faces popping up in the village that will threaten to disturb his newfound happiness, will Kieren ever get the chance to have that normal life he so desperately craves?
