Jay knows that Matt can be mean, he’s experienced it first hand. But there’s something else Jay has noticed in Matt that he can’t quite describe.
Sometimes, on rare occasions, usually after hours of riffing and improvisation, Matt will start going down a particular path. The path starts with usual banter, then quickly devolves into violent fantasy. It always ends the same, Matt heavy breathing, excusing himself and leaving the room for a few minutes, then jumping back into skits and bits as if nothing happened. Leaving Jay wondering, yet again, if he’d just been imagining things.

Jay wants to be somewhere else, back home with the space heater at his feet. The stadium is miserable, his chair is hard and small, and his lower-back pain is flaring. He's relieved that he was able to convince Matt against more hamburgers, narrowly escaping a pickle-flavored kiss. Speaking of, Jay watches the couple on the big screen smile and wave goodbye, replaced by a bright advertisement for concessions.
"We might be next!" Matt says, turning his head close to yell in Jay's ear.
What if Matt didn't eat all those Wahlburgers?

Gustavo could have turned the tape off then. He had the confirmation of Varga’s account. He had learned something very interesting and potentially useful about his enemy—Varga meant more to Lalo than a convenient receptacle for his sexual urges. He also had observed his spy in action—Varga’s skill at deceit was even greater than he’d thought, which offered both dangers and opportunities. It was doubtful he would glean anything else.
