"Vecna smells like death. And in a way almost inexplicable to Mike, he smells like fear. An all-consuming terror that emanates off of Vecna like an aura. It’s thick against his senses, heavy on his chest, and scratchy down his throat and veins.
'You are so tired of fighting.' Vecna’s voice feels as intrusive as his words, digging deep into Mike’s eardrums and filling his head with awful memories. He pushes them out. It doesn’t matter that he’s been sick of fighting for a long time, he won’t stop.
Vecna doesn’t wait for Mike’s useless brain to come up with words. 'Every noble march into battle has been tainted by your desire for each of those adventures to be your last.' He tilts his head at Mike, a flash of something dark dances across his eyes. 'You pride yourself on being a knight, a protector, a leader, the Paladin….'"

Summary
"“So do you want it?” Mike asked again. He didn't hesitate, sliding his hand even further up Will’s thigh, the touch heavy, and leaving no room for escape.
“Do you want to gain more experience, Will?”
Will looked over at Mike, whose gaze was intensely focused and seemed to be consuming Will. The weight of a decade-long crush crashed over him all at once, mixed with a sudden spike of anticipation that made his hands tremble. “I want it so bad,” Will whispered, his voice cracking.
“Let me at least show you. Then you can decide if it’s still a bad idea,” Mike said casually, the sharp lines of his face softening into a confident smirk.
Mike shifted his weight, sitting up fully to match Will against the wooden headboard, crowding him into the corner of the bed. Will sat completely frozen, his back pressed hard against the wall, his hands locked in his lap. He couldn’t believe this was actually happening. Mike was leaning over him, looming large and warm, offering to touch him. It felt like a fever dream, fake and entirely disconnected from reality."

Summary
Summer break, two years after graduating high school. Will and Mike almost kiss, and everything changes. They find themselves on a journey together after a mysterious clue. They have no choice but to finally confront what’s been going on between them for years.
“I keep showing up,” Mike says. His voice doesn’t break, but he feels like it should. “Even when you try to throw me away.”
Will flinches, and Mike hates himself for it immediately.
“I didn’t- ” Will says, and his eyes drop. “I didn’t throw you away.”
