Spock has fully recovered from his injury, which caused him only minor brain damage, and is now back to being his usual, highly efficient self on the bridge. So why doesn't Captain Kirk want to include him in the team exploring Aeres II? His help would be invaluable, considering that the civilization on Aeres II is reluctant to integrate with the Federation. And even if the Aeresites are convinced that Spock is their legendary Prince from Afar, it's easier to unravel their ancient mysteries than the incomprehensible ties that bind Spock to Kirk.

this kirk is amazing
"Jim made his peace with that ship sailing years ago, just around when Uhura and Spock split and Spock showed zero (0) interest in Jim. Well, he had gotten pretty drunk first, but in the wake of the hangover he had accepted it. He had packed up every unseemly thought, everything from mindless fantasies about long legs to daydreams about playing chess into his old age. Jim is excellent at compartmentalization.
For a wild second, Jim thinks that he might have imagined Spock speaking, until Spock prompts, “Jim?” and he sounds so uncharacteristically nervous that Jim almost starts laughing again.
Instead, he reaches up, until he finds what he’s pretty sure is Spock’s cheek. “Spock, buddy,” he says. “That’s the most romantic thing anyone has ever said to me.”
