She didn’t have to guess about what he meant, comparing the two of them to Icereach Coven and their conspirators; his skin had the same pallid undertones as hers, his eyes framed by the same blackish shadows. He was a vampire, and banking on her not being a frothing-at-the-mouth cultist.
“Lucky guess: I’m here trying to…” And abruptly she stopped, frowning at him. “I know you.”
“Y-Yes, I think…I think I know you as well, although you weren’t a vampire when we met. I-In fact, I would have been surprised, at the time, if I were told that you would be one day. You seemed very afraid of me.”

“When you endure such a thing as walking to the side of the Lord of Brutality,” she said with perfect solemnity, “you are well aware that no one can help you from your sorry place. Whatever was running through his mind, it was not the faintest of hope that his torment would be temporary.”
