Summary
I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.

The man between them looks almost bored, which is somehow the worst thing about him. He checks his watch. He looks at the door.
Come on, Colt thinks. At no one. At the door. At the empty idea of rescue. Come on. Come on.
He doesn't let himself think the name.
He thinks it anyway.

Summary
Ryland doesn't know where he is, what he's doing, or why he's doing it. All he knows is that he's in a universe with no stars and that an organization called the COI found the Hail Mary spinning out into deep space. He knows that Rocky may be injured somewhere, and he knows that the man that currently lays in a hospital bed in front of him should be dead as dirt but has miraculously survived.
He knows he has been given an ultimatum. Find out what brought Simon back to life or never see Rocky again.
The task proves more complicated than he thought.

“Sure.” Grace throws up his hands in surrender. “Let’s add ‘maybe an alien’ to the list of possibilities, right next to ‘spontaneously quantum leaped into our airlock’.”
That’s not too bad of a theory, actually, as far as impossible explanations go. Grace is going to have to start keeping an actual list.
He sighs. “Guess we’ll just have to ask him when he wakes up. If he does.”
A man covered in blood just appeared in the Hail Mary, hunted by something incomparably vast. Grace and Rocky have already saved the world once—time to get back to work and do it again. This time, science might not save them, but maybe friendship will still do the trick.
