Mycroft paused, glancing over his shoulder with a flicker of something almost, almost, soft in his expression. It was gone before most eyes could register it; a blink of warmth that didn’t fit the myth of “caring is not an advantage” before returning to its stoic mien and continuing to the exit.

The emotion that nearly burst from Mycroft at what he knew must have broken in Sherlock for him to utter that aloud was heartbreaking.

“I’m looking for a castle,” John informed the scarecrow. “A moving one.”

Except that, as it turned out, it was not a moving one at all.

    Summary

This essay, originally written in 2016 for the Johnlock Fanzine "Behind Closed Curtains No More," examines the history of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson as literary figures, their relationship to one another, and looks forward to the then-upcoming Series 4 with the anticipation that it would at long last unveil the true nature of their story.

While that didn't happen, I have always been tremendously proud of this piece. Of all my old work, it's the only thing I've never been ashamed of. This essay distills what I considered to be the key elements of the TJLC reading into their own kind of narrative, one about a story waiting desperately to be told.

You hold in your hands a leather-bound book inscribed with the title The Stories in Our Veins. No author is named by the cover. On the first page, the following passage has been written in an elegant, cursive hand:

A confederate who foresees your conclusions and course of action is always dangerous, but one to whom each development comes as a perpetual surprise, and to whom the future is always a closed book, is indeed an ideal helpmate.

Sherlock Holmes in “The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier,” written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1926.
