    Summary

    “Henry.”

    “Louder.”

Hans says, a little over a whisper, “Henry.”

If Henry had still been wearing his armor, the sound of his name would be barely audible over the metal clinking against metal, the leather straps stretching, the sword’s pommel hitting his plate, the blood, the city, the yelling men, the drunken men, the giggling girls. The dogs, the horses, the leather untied and dropped to the floor until he’s as quiet as he can be. It'll only get quieter. A sound slips into the spaces left open, for him.

    Summary

He had managed to control his thirst for centuries, exposed himself to human blood over and over again, reached into open chests, operated on more people than he could remember, their faces blurring together. He had bandaged, glued, and stitched wounds, washing the blood from his hands every day. Never touched it, always maintaining control, had seen himself in a position to teach others to control themselves as well.

So he wondered what had happened, what had led him to stand behind Forks' chief of police, so close, his chest was pressed against his back, whose injured hand gripped so tightly by him—it must hurt, lowering his head, a second away from tearing the man's carotid artery open.

    --------------------------------------

Carlisle tells the story of a fateful night when his self-control and ethics were severely tested by an overworked police officer.

    Summary

Charlie Swan’s life had a routine. It was a little lonely, sure, since he and Renée had called it quits, but that was sixteen years ago. He woke up early, he worked, he helped people where he could. It was a good routine.

Until, that is, his routine was disrupted, not only by the bodies being found along Route 112, but by Dr. Carlisle Cullen, the new consulting physician on the case. Carlisle who, as it happened, also knew something about loneliness, having practiced it for well over three hundred years himself.

    Summary

“It was a nice wedding,” Charles says.

The little bird sitting on the top of Arthur’s grave tilts its head and peers at him, then flutters off in a burst of chirps. Charles draws in a lungful of smoke, holds it there for a long moment until it burns, and exhales. He sets the unfinished half of the cigarette at the base of the cross, the smoke spiralling skywards like a prayer, and runs a thumb over the fading knife cuts in the wood.

    Summary

    “Hey.”

Charles looks up, squinting against the sun, and focuses on the figure looming above him. It’s a bright day on the mountain, and all this damned snow is doing nobody any favors. “Arthur,” he says. “Good morning.”

“Huh? Yeah, mornin’.” Arthur tilts his head, scratches at his jaw, and tucks his chin down towards his chest. It’s a very particular mannerism, one that Charles has watched him perform countless times.
