Summary
“Are we waiting for your Arthur to have an audience? I'm sure my men will have captured him by now,” the man continued, crossing his arms with amusement.
It was Merlin's sceptical sneer that broke Arthur's train of thought. He moved closer behind the rock wall to look at his face, and what he saw made him swallow hard. Merlin's gaze was lowered, but a bitter smile played on his lips as if the other man's words were the stupidest thing he had ever heard in his life.
“For the last time...” Merlin finally said, raising his head and staring at him arrogantly. “He's not coming. He doesn't care about me.”
Arthur's heart sank.
The man just smiled and took another step towards Merlin. The belt holding his boots fell to the ground.
“We'll see.”or

Summary
How Merlin had ended up dancing with Arthur in his chambers, he truly had no idea.
Yet there they were, with an extremely patient Arthur – more patient than Merlin had never seen him - guiding him and offering him gentle tips on how to move with the rhythm of the ballad. Although Merlin had landed on Arthur’s feet several times and had nearly throwing them off balance at least three occasions, Arthur hadn’t once scolded him or teased him.
He seemed relaxed, Merlin realised, catching the soft, encouraging smile on Arthur's face. It was strange to see him like that, especially since he had become king and his duties had multiplied. Yet now he looked unguarded, carefree.
And he was even more handsome than usual. -

Summary
He had followed him in silence to the edge of a tiny clearing in the woods. In the middle of it was a rock high enough to almost sit on, but Arthur had ignored it and stopped a little further on, his arms folded.
He had his back to him, which Merlin was momentarily grateful for because it had given him a way to catch his breath and hide any emotion from his face before the other began to speak.
It didn't take long. Only a few seconds of silence passed before Arthur's voice reached him in a painful whisper.
"Is this how it will be from now on? Will we ignore each other while pretending to enjoy someone else's company?"
Merlin closed his eyes, feeling the usual boulder weigh on his lungs. He wondered if he would get used to that feeling sooner or later. Probably not.
"Is this what you were doing? Pretending to enjoy Gwen's company?"
Arthur's shoulders stiffened, but he didn't respond.
"And let me guess," he continued, now blabbering on. "You think that's what I was doing too, right? With Lancelot?"
There was a moment of silence, and then Arthur answered, in a flat voice.
"Was it?"
"No". -

Summary
The second time Arthur noticed something was really wrong with Merlin was the next day, during the banquet in honour of Queen Annis's last day of her visit, and it seemed like a perfectly normal and thoroughly enjoyable evening.
It was just as Merlin poured the wine into his glass that Arthur noticed something that immediately caught his eyes and that made his bowels twist in a painful grip. The sleeve of Merlin's tunic had risen slightly and Arthur's attention had shifted to his servant's right wrist, where there was a purplish-yellow bruise that looked a couple of days old.
“What’s that?”, he asked abruptly.or
Arthur notices that something is wrong with Merlin and decides to intervene.

It was secret: behind closed doors they were closer than what people saw them to be. No one knew that the two had been courting for years, no one knew that Arthur had proposed underneath a willow tree, no one knew that Merlin said yes.
