In his life, both in his practice and out in the wild, he’d seen many shoulders. Many stretches of soft skin. Many black bras. But there in that office, that cold, humming room, her eyes soft on his face, it felt like the very first time.)

Not long after near-death in the mines and that night in the clinic, the Farmer all but disappears from the face of Pelican Town. Then, she misses the last appointment for her rabies vaccination.

(Truth be told, he’d give her anything she asked to keep her out of those mines. She just had to name the price. All the money he could muster, all the precious metal he could pluck from the earth. He’d be her scarecrow, standing out in her field, chasing birds away from her crops if it meant she’d stay inside and just sit still. Just let her bones heal. Her budget was infinite. If she wanted it, it was hers.)
The Farmer considered him, her eyes tracing all along his face. She shrugged her good shoulder, shook her head. “Nothing.”

Summary
Maverick McKinnley was supposed to be walking down the aisle.
Instead, she drove.

Armed with an engineering degree, a temper she refuses to unpack, and a farm that may or may not be salvageable, Maverick decides one thing: she will build something that cannot collapse.
Dr. Harvey of Pelican Town disagrees with at least half of her life choices.
Especially the part where she keeps nearly dying in the mines.
Slow burn. Reckless farmer. A doctor who is far less mild than he appears.
Update: I originally planned for this story to continue into a much larger second arc, but after revisiting the heart of Maverick and Harvey’s journey, I realized their story had already reached the ending it was always meant to have.
I’ve added a final epilogue to give them the quiet, healing, full-circle future they deserved.

Summary
Winter is leaving the Valley- not that you know what the Valley looks like normally. You've come by to check on your grandfather, and ended up burying him in the same breath.
With the excuse of your arrival laid to rest, you have to come up with some new reasons as to why you're staying in town. If the kind doctor Harvey can see right through them all, he's kind enough not to tell you. Unfortunately, he's probably kind enough to fall in love with.
The air is warming up, and your body is yours again. Spring is on its way.

Summary
Harvey thought he had built a stone fortress around the part of him that used to hope – for anything, really. Fame, fortune, a chance at a soulmate. He thought he had walled off that part of himself, starved it of oxygen and sunlight and nutrients until there was no chance of growth. Of life.
He was wrong.
For the first time in a long time, Harvey reluctantly acknowledges that a fragile, delicate kind of hope has bloomed in his chest. It is nothing more than a seedling – a thin stem, see-through leaves, fully at the mercy of the animals around it. But still, stubbornly, despite his best efforts, it grows.
