He was willing to chip at it, at his father’s carefully constructed cage, bit by bit. He could make it clear that his body was not his; and what with everybody so keen to take control of it, he could make sure they know that everybody—anybody was welcome to do with it what they will.
(He didn’t hate his father as much as he hated himself anymore.)
It was a small rebellion, more or less invisible, but he could see it. And Neil Perry just wasn’t brave enough to rebel in bolder colours anymore.
After a failed suicide attempt, Neil is desperately trying to hang on to who he was before, but that person is slipping through his fingers. He’s not sure whether he ever existed at all.

But Shane had hardly spoken three complete sentences since he got here a week ago.
"I mean, can you blame me? I don't really trust 'nice' people anymore." Shane gave him a look that almost reminded Ilya of himself. Projecting, shielding, hiding. Ilya felt his face go soft. Shanes only became more stoic. "Thanks for the effort, but leave me the fuck alone."
Ilya watched as the door to his small, and now shared dorm, shut behind Shane. He knew one thing, he saw right through this whole "tough guy" act.
