Sam glanced over the mottled bruises and thick scars wrapping around his torso, accompanied by a hollow stomach and protruding ribs. Dried blood coated his side, spilled from a large gash in his abdomen. Tremors ran up his spine, making him fight so hard to sit still under Sam’s hands. His tearful eyes refused to make contact, like he was afraid of what would follow if he did.
Like this, he didn’t seem so scary. Just… fragile, like tempered glass beneath the threat of a nail.
Or: Sam stumbles across an injured and fearful man in the middle of the night, one month after Triskelion. After bringing him back to his apartment to treat his wounds, he realizes just who — what — he's brought into his home.

That wasn’t even their number one concern. No, it was the fact that Sam had gotten face to face with Bucky, and if he hadn’t noticed the cell beside his apples earlier, he must’ve thought Sam was leaning in for a goddamn kiss.
A wince came from Bucky, and the nonchalant man had immediately realized what he did. It was like he turned into a cocoon real easily, turning away and flushing from the sudden action. Bucky Barnes having the capability to actually be shy and fearful? Not a sight to see everyday.
OR
Sam makes a mistake of suddenly invading Bucky’s space, causing him to storm out. A long morning starts, and it continues with apple slices and making out. Turns out, the former Winter Soldier is not what he is rumoured to be; instead, he was shy and careful.

Summary
He’s in a private hospital room- one in the military hospital back on base, if he had to guess. There’s an IV in his elbow, and a heart monitor, and a whole host of other machines that he can’t quite get a look at from here. There’s a single, tiny window in the corner, though any light passing through it is dimmed by closely-drawn blinds. And by the bedside there’s Bucky, slumped in a cramped plastic chair, his arms folded. He’s glaring at the heart monitor’s screen with narrowed eyes. He doesn’t seem to notice Sam at all.
“Morning, sunshine,” Sam tries to say. What he manages is more of a rough, hacking cough. Bucky snaps to attention like he’s just been administered an electric shock. Sam is half-surprised that he doesn’t leap out of his chair.

His mission directive was clear: Travel back in time, go to the Stark Expo, and retrieve the stolen Wakandan artefact as a promise of goodwill and a way to make amends with a valued ally. He had finished the first half of his mission and secured the artefact, but he had not activated the Temporal Shift Device to return him to his own time. Curiosity had gotten the better of Sam. Curiosity and a yearning deep inside. He knew that there was a chance that he would see this other Bucky. He knew that if he set the Device to pick-up Bucky’s corporeal frequency, he would find him in the sea of people. The fact of the matter was, Sam missed Bucky. He missed his Bucky.
