Summary
Thirteen years is a long time to spend grieving for a dead man. Even longer to realise that the ache you feel inside your breastbone won’t go away, no matter how hard you try to move on.
The seasons - they come and go, years start to blur together and Lan Wangji finds himself lost in moments like these ones, looking out the window of the Jingshi towards the night sky. He swallows down the lump in his throat, eyelids weighted and scratchy from too much emotion that loving a dead man brings.
Still, he waits with the hopes that one day the universe would be kind enough to return to him the man he loves.

A happy ending depends on where you stopped the story. Wei Wuxian had never put much faith in such an idle saying.
But his story had ended over a decade ago, and the world had moved too far forward for him to find his own place. What use was a nightmares role in a time of peace, except to hide away and retreat from everyone else's happy ending?
It isn't upsetting. He has people in this world who love him, even if he can't be with them. And it's good, to be alone, figure out how the world has changed under his own standing. Honestly, he's fine alone.
Fortunately, the people who love him refuse to let him be lonely. And sometimes it takes a third chance for the souls to click back into place.
(The one where Wei Wuxian travels alone, only to find home in the place he never dared to hope for. Or alternatively, the one where Lan Zhan holds his soulmate and tells him he can stay.)
