Ryland blinked. The world swam.
A face. Above him. Backlit by the gray afternoon sky streaming through the shattered window, features shadowed and impossible to resolve into anything coherent. Strong jaw. Blue eyes sharp, looking at him with an intensity that should have been frightening but wasn't, somehow. Wasn't frightening at all.
Court?
The name surfaced from somewhere deep and buried under years of carefully constructed normalcy. The face above him blurred and shifted in his failing vision, and for one breathless, impossible moment it was him. Older, harder, scarred in ways Ryland's memory didn't account for, but him.
Oh, Ryland thought, with the strange, floating calm of someone who understood they were dying. You came to get me.
Or
Sierra Six is hired to protect Dr. Ryland Grace after an attempt on his life. This should change nothing, but instead it changes quite a few things.

3. Anaxa won’t let Phainon hurt himself, but he will do it for him.
4. (E) Phainon wants to be punished for the sins his other self committed.
5. Anaxa finds himself in Aedes Elysiae with a Phainon who’s younger than he should be.
6. Wildlife rehabilitator Phainon gets injured on the job. Mydei isn’t happy about it.
7. (E) The Chrysos Heirs have dinner. Phainon doesn’t get a seat at the table with them.
8. (E) Phainon coughs up flowers. Anaxa watches.
9. (E) Lygus pays his research subject a visit.
10. Anaxa could spare Phainon from this. Aglaea already knows it won’t happen.
11. (E) While in Lygus’s head, Anaxa witnesses something he shouldn’t.
12. Anaxa frightens his little student unintentionally. -

“Him,” Veritas says. “Him. Not it.”
His attacker lets out a hollow laugh. “Him? That there isn’t a person but a Trojan horse. A pretty facade with rotten insides, ready to open our doors to a horde of others of its kind.”
Veritas’ hands tighten into fists at his side. “You know nothing about him.”
