    Buck fumbles with his mug, sloshing coffee over his hands. “Ah, what?” He shoots a panicked glance towards the hallway, hoping Eddie is on his way back. “I mean—we, uh—”

    Chris doesn’t seem to notice his panic at all, continuing brightly. “Because my friend Tommy, his mom is dating someone, and he said that sometimes they have sleepovers.” He looks up. “If you and my dad were dating, we could have sleepovers too!”

    “Ugh, it’s freezing,” Buck complains, padding back into the room. He climbs into bed, tucking into Eddie’s side.

    “It really isn’t,” Eddie tells him. “You might have a fever.” He skates his hands over Buck’s skin, up and along his jaw to cup his face. “Mm, you definitely have a fever.”

    “It’s just a cold,” Buck grumbles, throwing an arm over Eddie’s waist. “It’ll be over in a day, tops.”

    “Mm?” He turns to Chris, drinking in the sight of him. It feels unreal, that despite everything they’re both still here.

    Alive.

    “You’re bleeding.” Chris’s fingers brush Buck’s face and the salt that’s crusted around the long scrape. It’s sluggishly bleeding thanks to the blood thinners Buck’s taking.

    “So are you.” Buck smooths a thumb over the shallow scrape on Chris’ temple above his eye. “We match.”
