Riza stumbled into the hollow, mouth agape with every breath she took. She collapsed in a heap, tail sprawled behind her. Her entire body ached, her muscles sore from the run, her paw pads cracked from the rocky soil. Riza twisted her head to lick clumsily at the wound on her shoulder; the rain had washed most of the blood off of her fur, but the gash was still open and oozing.
Thunder boomed overhead, the sound echoing deep in the marrow of her bones. And for a moment, Riza allowed herself to think.
I'm a cat, she asserted. I'm a cat, and this is the most ridiculous thing that has ever happened to me.
