Scruffy beard, glasses, hair in disarray. He's in a simple button-down and jeans, no place to hide any meaningful weapons, and faces away from Driver—exposes his vulnerable side, forgoes line of sight—to crouch in front of two boys who have been so silent he only now notices.
“C'mere,” the man mutters. He hoists one of them up and into his arms. The boy rests his cheek on the man's shoulder with a quiet sniffle, eyes squeezed shut. His small hands wrap around the man's nape in a death grip. He has a SpongeBob-patterned bandaid on his nose bridge.
The other boy grips onto the man's shirt hem with just as much vigor, though his eyes are wide open. He looks up at Driver with pointed eyes, clear and devastatingly full of suspicion.
They look at each other for half a moment of contemplative quiet.
Then, softly, “What floor?” Driver asks.
The elevator door closes.

Driver moves to the new apartment. Instead of Irene, his neighbor is kind teacher Ryland Grace with two twin younger brothers he's taking care of.

Summary
In 2018, Elijah Kamski announced the creation of CyberLife.
A year later, Grover Cleveland's newest middle school teacher, Ryland Grace, finds an android in the shady back alleyway behind his shitty apartment, he decides to haul it to a repair shop. When it begs him for help instead, he takes it home. The sun is dimming and San Francisco just experienced snow for the first time in decades.
Then he wakes up on a ship in space. The only companion by his side is an android named Driver. The rest of his crew is dead and he can't even remember his own name.
This changes everything.
It also changes nothing.

Not 7:10. Not 7:20. Seven-fourteen, the way a clock keeps time — without deciding to, without knowing it was being watched. Driver had started noting it the third week. By the fifth, he didn’t need to look at his phone anymore. He just knew. He’d be at his door with his coffee, stepping out to the shared landing for air, and the door at the end of the hall would open.

Ryland smiled. Or at least, I think he tried to. The expression twitched halfway through and he made a wincing face that disappeared as fast as he made it.
"We are," he said after a pause. "Close friends."
His eye twitched.

Because Ryland suddenly sounded emotionally constipated, like he was hiding a massive and pointy shit inside his ass and desperately hoping nobody would notice. Which immediately made me notice.

Summary
Rocky lived his happily ever after with Grace and Adrian. Until he died. And then woke up a week before the Blip A was meant to launch. He makes a few last minute changes.
Eva Stratt is not having a good day. It was hard enough dealing with the aliens trying to eat her sun. Now she has to deal with the other aliens that know much more about her and Earth than she's comfortable with. And they also claim to have the answer to the Astrophage problem, provided she's willing to hand Ryland Grace to them.
Grace wishes he could stop getting 'promoted' with no option to say no. At least his new job has better hours, if you could ignore the whole being stuck in space on an alien vessel thing.
