Summary
Bad dreams suck. Grace wakes up from a nightmare of being on the Hail Mary, which is utterly impossible, but his throat hurts like he really did have a tube pulled out of it.
Turns out, he wasn't the only one to have that dream. Which was even more impossible than him actually being on a ship that's not even fully built.
aka A movie react fic where everyone sees the film in dreams.

Summary
Time is a fickle thing.
One day you are young, playing in the rain with a smile etched onto your face. The next day you are old, graduating college and stressing about bills and student loans.
Then in the next, you are young again, too young and too scared as you are told that you are going to be sent on a suicide mission to save your planet- and in the next heartbeat you are old again, walking with a cane and greying around the edges.
In the blink of an eye you realize that you only thought you were old back when you were young because you were naive, you thought you knew all the world had to offer. But now you know the truth, because now you are actually old and you know you could never even begin to imagine to know all twists and turns of the universe.
Then, inexplicably, you are so so so very young again.
And isn't that a shock for Ryland Grace to wake up to.

For them. For every single student he ever had that had to look up at the sky, terrified that they were going to die.And he had a brother all alone somewhere way up in that very same sky to save too.
As fast as humanly possible.

Summary
Rocky was everywhere in those months. Translating, explaining, checking on Grace between meetings, settling beside him on the beach in the evenings with the comfortable familiarity of someone who had been doing exactly this for years. Which he had. Which was normal. Which was what Grace had.
Then the meetings got longer. Then Rocky started coming to the beach less. Then there were days Grace didn’t see him at all, just received a brief communication through the translator system — Rocky is in conference, will check on Grace later — and later became the next morning, and the morning after that.
Grace told himself this was fine.

Bookmarker's Notes
“Grace should not do this,” Fig said. “Grace is not a problem. Grace is interesting and strange and very difficult to understand biologically, and Fig has found the last several weeks to be among the most scientifically significant of Fig’s career.” A pause that Grace suspected was as close as Fig got to warmth. “Also Fig would like Grace to stay for a long time. Erid would like Grace to stay. Rocky would like Grace to stay. This is the consensus.”
Grace looked at the waves.
“I’d like to stay too,” he said.

Summary
Every screen in the room blazed with the same breaking news feed. An alien voice had just asked for him by name on live television.
“Mr. Grace?” little Jamal whispered from the front row, eyes huge behind his glasses. “Is that really you they’re talking about? Like, you you?”
Ryland’s mouth opened, but nothing came out. His heart slammed against his ribs like it wanted to escape and hide under the desk with the class hamster. He was just Mr. Grace. The guy who drew cartoon planets on the board, who stayed late helping kids glue together messy dioramas of the solar system, who once spent an entire lunch period comforting a sobbing girl because her goldfish had “gone to the great fishbowl in the sky.” He graded spelling tests on vocabulary words like photosynthesis and asteroid. Aliens did not know his name. Aliens did not ask for science teachers.
The marker slipped from his fingers and clattered to the floor.

THIS EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS
“Hello Earth! I am Rocky from Erid.”
The silence that followed was absolute.
Teddy leaned into the microphone like a man stepping up to a loaded gun, throat dry, pulse hammering in his ears.
“Hello. I am Teddy Sanders from Earth.”
A short, almost polite pause.
Then the reply came, gentle and unwavering:
“Hello human Teddy. Wish to speak with Grace now.”
Then Grace once again gets kidnapped by every government ever

Summary
The thing about them is that where one goes, everyone follows.
Sai watches as Fang and his friends load up an escape pod. There's little to take home, most of it small tokens they've collected over the years, and it's fortunate because they can't afford to lose any more time over what they're about to do.
"You could come with us."
Gopal fiddles with his hands as he repeats the question everyone else has asked them. He catches the way Shielda looks at the girls, more than a little tempted with how close they've gotten but even now, Sai knows his twin more than he knows himself.
(He's considered it, too.
But like him, Shielda already knows his answer.)
So he smiles, soft and genuine, and says, "You know we can't."

Bookmarker's Notes
It's been eight months since they last went to earth.
It's been eight months, and they still can't go back.
The kids all ask whenever they can. Boboiboy the most, Ying the least. But they all do.
And they're always denied.
Again, and again, and again.
-
They still keep asking.
