Summary
Disaster strikes the Hail Mary on its way back to Earth. The taumoeba escape their breeding tanks, and make it to the fuel lines. Stranded in space just outside the Tau Ceti system, Dr Ryland Grace can't do anything. He can't go save Rocky, he can't go save Earth. Exhausted, out of options, and distraught, he fills the ship with nitrogen, and takes his final breath.
Next thing he knows, his eyes flutter open in his San Francisco apartment. It's a year before ArcLight touches down on Earth, but he remembers the Petrova Task Force.

He couldn’t take it anymore, Grace needed to sit. He plops right down onto the sterile flooring, knees up as he rests his arms across them, head buried. Biking that hard for that long, then running across the building at full speed really wasn’t a smart idea in his current condition. He might throw up. He’s been so nauseous lately.
Grace could feel Stratt’s eyes on him, looking, calculating. Evenly, she speaks again.
“…Your physiological state is affecting performance?”
Grace closed his eyes briefly.
“I said I’m fine.”
“You are not answering honestly."
“I’m just pregnant,” he said, emotion finally leaking through to his voice. Grace refuses to cry here.
A pause. Then Stratt speaks again.
“Does this impair cognitive function?”
“No,” he said, voice wobbling.
“Then it is irrelevant.”

Indelible; Impossible to erase or forget.
Doctor Captain Ryland Grace, Saviour of the sun, and thus the earth.
Selfishly, she was both relieved and disappointed that he had chosen to save the friend he made in space, instead of return to his home.
Some nights, she would wake in terror at the thought of having to face him after all these years, her mouth full of cotton and her head pounding. The same man that she had sent lightyears away, not a grey hair on his head.
She had atoned for her crimes, she believed. She would atone for years to come, even after death, and the thought brought her a painful comfort, like a bruise she pressed on. The tattoo that marked her throat would make sure to remind her of her crimes, of her fate as an inevitable scapegoat.
Yet, she did not think she could ever fully atone in the eyes of Ryland Grace. And she would not blame him. She tells herself she does not need his forgiveness.

Grace's journey to Erid is long and taxing. 4 whole years spent on the Hail Mary by Rocky's side has inevitably brought them closer together, despite the last year mostly consisting of Grace trying his very best not to die and keep himself from throwing up taumoeba into the bathroom. It’s only after his body has stopped fighting desperately for his life that his mind has the time to catch up on everything that has happened with Rocky…and on Earth without him. It doesn’t help that he’s going to be the only human on a planet of Eridians and that his best friend’s mate doesn’t seem to like him much at all.
Or
Ryland Grace tries his best to begin to live again rather than just be alive, balancing his severe attachment to Rocky and helping to fix Rocky’s marriage to a frustrated Adrian.
