It's been two years since Gurathin's last overdose, keeping him from a long sabotage mission meant to get rid of some far-away planetary leader.
He hates it kind of makes sense the Company won't send him alone now: Deep cover, several weeks long. A hotel whose private networks he'll use to data-mine, and people he'll have to kill. His bodyguard is supposed to pose as an augmented human, though — So of course he wonders if they're sending him to die. SecUnits aren't even sentient. Right?
Maybe the best thing he could do is disappear. And maybe the best way to try is doing it together.

He’s not asleep when I enter the room. I have access to his augments; I can tell. When a human being sleeps, their heart rate and body temperature fall, as does their breathing rate. In stage one, the muscles relax; during REM sleep, they immobilize, or at least ideally they do (I’ve seen enough television to know about sleepwalking). I know the general parameters, and he’s not in them. He’s still awake, a little bit. You wouldn’t know just from looking at him.

Grace huffs something out, shallow in his throat, a bit like a whine, and instinctively shivers.The pressure toes the thin line between a grounding weight and a sharp point of pain and discomfort. It is, he realizes, the first time Stratt has touched him in a while… and so firm, is the thing; it is not a passing nudge or pull in any direction, but heavy and undeniable.
Without the energy for arrogance, or to make some corny half-baked joke, he doesn’t fight her. He lets his forehead sink until it rests against the dark fabric of her trousers, just above her knee. The world stops spinning quite so fast when he has something solid to lean against.

Except, he doesn’t even make it to the threshold to cross the hallway of the ship. His feet stop. A complete, precise standstill.
Rocky had chittered at him, a short burst of notes, monosyllabic in Eridian despite the layers of chords. He registered it not as any word, yet the command still struck.
Stay.
Heeled. Like a dog.
And it wasn’t by any doing of Grace’s own decision making.

"Shoot," Rocky says, his voice sounding amused. "But not actually shoot."
Grace wants to laugh at the joke (he's been getting better at joking and sarcasm) but instead he swallows, his fingers tracing idle patterns on the blanket. The ache from earlier at the classroom, the beach, the constant invisible wall feels closer tonight.
"What does it feel like... to touch you?" he asks. "I mean, if we could. Your carapace. Your claws. What would it feel like to me?"
Rocky is quiet for a long beat. When he sings again, his melody is thoughtful and gentle.
"Hard. Rocky, like name. Like...strong stone that is alive. My claws are sharp but careful. My body pulses a little when I am happy. Like singing Grace can feel instead of hear." He pauses, then adds with a soft, almost shy trill, "What does human skin feel like, question? To me, I wonder."
He imagines it.
In his mind, the xenonite shell vanishes.

“Grace must not continue to have nightmare,” he states after a moment, “nightmare make sleep bad. Bad sleep bad bad bad for human health.”
”I know,” I assure him, my voice now sounding more like my own and less whiny, “just not sure what I can do about it. Trauma can take a lifetime to get over even at the best of times, and this,” I wave my hands around to indicate Mary and our general current situation, “is not the best of times.”
Grace is desperately touch-starved and suffering from constant nightmares about the day he was forced onto the Hail Mary against his will. Rocky will fix, and Grace will discover some deep-seated truths about himself along the way.
So basically this is me dumping everything possible onto my traumatised space cinnamon roll Ryland Grace, who is not a real human and is actually every single anxiety disorder stacked on top of one another, wearing a trenchcoat and crying. But it's OK, because Rocky is a very clever Eridian, and he will fix his leaky space blob whatever it takes. Mostly film canon but elements taken from the book. I'll leave an apology here in advance, you'll probably need it.

That is a lot of words, and Grace is pointedly half-asleep. They trickle over him in lazy streams of thought as he sips his coffee, through his early, “it-is-maybe-morning” fog…
—And then he nearly chokes on his coffee, cheeks flushed bright, bright red.
