Steve doesn’t realize it until July, until after everything has happened, but he’s known Billy Hargrove for years. He’s not sure how he figures it out. It’s sometime after stripping out of his destroyed Scoops uniform, but before scrubbing the blood off his face, before he digs into those bruises just hard enough to hurt. It’s not shocking or startling. It doesn’t knock him off his feet.

The red light turns green and Steve pulls through it. He’s looking straight ahead, out into the snow and the cold night air when he says, “He doesn’t remember.”
He hears more than sees El shrug again. “No,” she says finally. “But he will.”

Will calls her Shadysider trash under his breath when their mom isn’t looking, and later she pulls Nick to the side and says, “You’ll make sure she’s welcomed, won’t you sweetie? It’s so nice of Mr. Perry to bring his stepdaughters into his home. I’m sure the younger one in particular will need help adjusting.”
Privately, Nick isn’t too sure what’s so remarkable about it, but he nods for her sake. Mr. Perry’s new stepdaughters won’t impact him anyway.

It’s the question that’s been hanging between them for years now. Not why he didn’t believe her. Not why he didn’t stand up for her when it counted. But this.
Nick downs his glass of wine in one go, expression soft if somewhat strained. He meets her trembling gaze without hesitation.
“You know why, Ziggy,” he replies softly. “You know.”
Ziggy grunts a little, overwhelmed by the intensity in his gaze.
“I wish you hadn’t,” she says. “Do you know that? I wish you had just let me stay dead.”
“I know,” he says, catching her off guard. “But I couldn’t let you go. I can’t.”
It should be romantic. If this were a movie, it would be. Ziggy has had him inside her. Has seen him naked and bare and vulnerable. But this confession doesn’t make her heart warm.
No, she shivers instead. He tracks the movement with his eyes, throat bobbing.

Ian smirks as he imagines a bright, neon Pride rainbow arcing over Mickey’s head; an irrepressible flashing, queer beacon, despite the tough man act. He may not have known him long, but he’s sure Mickey would knock his teeth out and curb stomp him if he knew what he was thinking, and he smiles at that.
Mickey and Ian come from opposite sides of the tracks, but strike up an unexpected and deep friendship. When their lives implode however, it’s tested to the limit – while also revealing that things between them are not quite what they seem.
This is a retelling of Definitely Something Special from Ian's POV and assumes knowledge of that fic. If you haven't read it, you should do so before starting this. You should also read it in its entirety (rather than both side-by-side), or else you'll get spoilers. As with the first fic, this contains some dark and heavy moments detailed in the tags. The tone is mostly humorous and a lot is new material, though some scenes and dialogue have to be repeated. If the title seems weird it'll make sense in context.

Mickey and Ian come from opposite sides of the tracks, but strike up an unexpected and deep friendship. When their lives implode however, it’s tested to the limit – while also revealing that things between them are not quite what they seem.
Despite this being a ‘friends to lovers’ fic it deals with some very heavy and dark subject matter, so if you’re looking for a lite fluff-fest this ain’t it. That’s not to say there’s no fluff – I always balance out the dark stuff with sweet and comedic moments and actually the tone of most of this is humorous. But please be sure to read the tags so you’re not caught off-guard. I also use chapter-by-chapter trigger warnings.
There are two separate versions of this story: Mickey's here and then Ian's. This fic should be read first to avoid spoilers contained in Ian's POV Looking Through a Glass Onion.
