    Summary

Rocky visits Grace's life support quarters with some exciting news, some time into his recovery on Erid---the biodome habitat has finally been completed.

It takes a step through the airlock and sinks down into rough sand and pebbles. I chirp and hop down after it. Grace has not seen the biodome yet, but neither have I, and in my enthusiasm I dart slightly ahead.

Grace inhales so sharply that I turn to hear him better in a panic. “Grace? Grace, what is wrong? You are hurt?”

My assumption is quickly corrected when, without warning, it bolts.

    Summary

Dimitri clearly isn't going to leave him alone until he gets an answer. “Urghh, um… I dunno. You might have to drag me up there.”

    “That can certainly be arranged!”

“Why do I even— You know what, no, please don't do that,” because Dimitri definitely will do that, or worse, “I'll.. Mm, give it like five songs. Maybe ten. Bear with me here.”

Dimitri waggles a finger at him, snatching back the empty shot glass straight from his hand. “Seven songs.”

“......Seven songs,” Ryland sighs, feeling rather like a man signing his own death warrant.

    Summary

Every screen in the room blazed with the same breaking news feed. An alien voice had just asked for him by name on live television.

“Mr. Grace?” little Jamal whispered from the front row, eyes huge behind his glasses. “Is that really you they’re talking about? Like, you you?”

Ryland’s mouth opened, but nothing came out. His heart slammed against his ribs like it wanted to escape and hide under the desk with the class hamster. He was just Mr. Grace. The guy who drew cartoon planets on the board, who stayed late helping kids glue together messy dioramas of the solar system, who once spent an entire lunch period comforting a sobbing girl because her goldfish had “gone to the great fishbowl in the sky.” He graded spelling tests on vocabulary words like photosynthesis and asteroid. Aliens did not know his name. Aliens did not ask for science teachers.

The marker slipped from his fingers and clattered to the floor.
