"It" happened to be the mirror John spotted at the market. It was bought per Arthur's request after hearing John describe it— full length, with an ornate golden frame— and when asked what Arthur wanted it for, he shrugged and explained that he was sure that they'd find a use for it eventually.
Unbeknownst to John, Arthur already had plenty of ideas in mind since the moment it was described to him.

(What Eiffel and Hera were /really/ doing with the sensory array while Minkowski played Die Hard in the vents system. Or, as I say every single time I watch Watchmen (2009) and subsequently the worst soundtracked sex scene ever: THE SHIP GETS TO CUM TOO!)

Experiencing a difference in code after its meeting with Future tends to elicit feelings such as frustration and disappointment in Sayer, but now there is a bit more at play. Perhaps time dissecting those feelings with a particularly agreeable resident could shed some light on these new impulses.
