“Enemies is kind of a strong word.”

    Eric arches a wry eyebrow.

“Then what would you call it?” he asks, genuinely curious.

    Kyle shrugs, suddenly coy.

“We’re friends,” he replies, like it’s that simple.

    *~*~*~*~*~*

“Nice of you to show up,” Kyle teases, tilting his chin a tad. “Did you enjoy?”

    Eric nods slowly.

“Yeah, it was a good game. Looks like I came at the right time, seems like you guys weren’t playing so hot before I showed up.”

Kyle makes a soft, amused hum in the back of his throat, hands slipping behind his back. Eric blinks, his heart racing.

Is this flirting? Are we actually flirting right now?

“Guess that makes you my lucky charm, huh?” Kyle asks, arching an eyebrow.

Eric feels like he’s about to spontaneously combust, leaving a pile of ashes in his sneakers.

Holy fuck he is flirting with me! Dorky, corny flirting at that, oh my god!

    Bookmarker's Notes

"Yeah, there are a million fucking reasons why you shouldn’t love me, but there’s also a damn good one why you should.”

Cartman reached into his hoodie pocket then and pulled out what appeared to be an old bus or train ticket of some sort, yellowed and frayed with time.

“The thing is, Kyle, I’m never going to be the ‘safe’ choice. It’s just that you’re also never going to be safer than you are with me. Because I will fucking die before I let something happen to you— before I let anyone or anything take you from me.”

Despite the confidence that had built in his voice, Cartman was trembling slightly as he grabbed Kyle’s hand, forcing the redhead’s palm open to place the worn piece of paper in it. Kyle blinked in confusion, then held it out in front of his face to get a better look. The ink was smudged, but he could still make out the largest words, printed in the center.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Kyle started laughing for real then, full-body, helpless. The kind of laugh that made his ribs ache, and his nose scrunch, and his eyes go shiny for a completely different reason.

Cartman stared at him, and it hit him right in the chest.

    God, he was so gone.

Kyle’s curls bounced as he laughed. His cheeks were still blotchy from crying earlier, his eyes a little puffy, his freckles bright. He looked tired and swollen and in a borrowed hoodie that didn’t quite sit right over his bump.

Cartman thought he’d never looked more unfairly, stupidly, painfully beautiful.

    *~*~*~*~*~*

“So, when is she usually awake?”

    Kyle glanced at him. “What?”

“When is she usually active?” Cartman repeated, like this was suddenly very important.

Kyle’s face warmed a little. There was something almost embarrassingly sweet about the fact that Cartman was asking that so seriously. Like he was taking mental notes. Like this information mattered.

“I don’t know, dude. I can’t exactly ask her for her calendar.”

Cartman ignored that. “Does she go quiet for long stretches?”

    “Sometimes.”

    “How long?”

Kyle turned toward him more fully now, incredulous and amused all at once. “Why are you interrogating me like this?”

“I’m not interrogating you,” Cartman said defensively. “I’m gathering data!”

    “You are absolutely interrogating me.”

“I am trying,” Cartman said, lowering his voice and glancing around like this was a private matter, “to understand why your daughter keeps throwing raves in your stomach at three in the morning.”

    Kyle’s lips twitched.

    “Our daughter,” he said automatically.

“Yeah,” Cartman said back, more gently with fondness. “Our daughter.”

Something in Kyle's chest squeezed so hard it almost hurt. He looked away first because he had to. Because if he kept looking at Cartman like that in a waiting room full of strangers, he was going to do something humiliating, like melt directly through the chair or try to see if Cartman could get him pregnant a second time after dragging him into the nearest empty exam room.

    *~*~*~*~*~*

The second Kyle settled, Cartman made a low sleepy sound and moved toward him immediately. His arm came around Kyle’s middle, heavy and warm, dragging him back against his chest with surprising force for someone fully unconscious. Kyle let out a startled little breath as Cartman burrowed in, face pressing between Kyle’s shoulder blades for a second before he adjusted, nosing sleepily down along the back of Kyle’s neck like he was trying to find the exact right place to fit.

“Mm... There you are,” Cartman mumbled, voice ruined with sleep.

    “Eric—” Kyle whispered, startled.

Cartman only made another low noise in his throat and tugged him closer, “I think I dreamed about her.”

    “What?”

Cartman mumbled again, quieter this time, words slurring at the edges. “Baby,” he said.

Within maybe thirty seconds, his breathing deepened again. Kyle stayed awake. He turned his head just enough to look back over his shoulder. Cartman’s face was half-hidden in the pillow, hair a mess, lashes dark against his cheeks, mouth soft with sleep. He let himself sink back into the warmth of the bed, into Cartman behind him, into the hand still curved protectively over the front of his stomach.

A minute later, so quietly Kyle almost thought he imagined it, Cartman mumbled, “Love you.”

    ~from Chapter 21 (20)

    *~*~*~*~*~*

"I don't like her, that's the thing..." Kyle looked at him then, really looked at him, and whatever Eric saw in his face made his own go quiet. “I love her. I love her so much that it makes me sick sometimes." He looked terrified the second he said it. “I love her,” he repeated, smaller this time.

Eric’s hand stayed on Kyle’s stomach, but his eyes lifted to Kyle’s face, and Eric’s eyes filled instantly at the sight of him. “You do?”

“Don’t,” Kyle said, voice breaking. “Don’t cry because of what I said. I mean it,” he shuddered, tears still spilling down his own face. “If you cry, I’m gonna cry worse, and I already can’t breathe right because your huge baby is crushing my organs.”

Eric let out a broken, wet laugh before he could stop it. “My huge baby?”

    “Yes, your huge baby.”

Eric’s hand slid from Kyle’s stomach to his side, not leaving him, just holding him differently, and he braced himself for the words he was about to say before taking a deep breath, “I think I love her too.”
