David Hollander doesn't walk in on them at the cottage. Instead Ilya gets a phone call that his brother has died and his niece is an orphan in need of his care. Ilya and Shane have to make a new plan to make space in their lives for a toddler.
Shane’s shoulders are shaking like he wants to be pacing or screaming or both but he’s holding himself in place on willpower alone, “You can’t risk being deported, not with a kid, not for any reason. And maybe it’ll be good for you, I mean you’ll need help, right? And she’ll help you? And if they ever suspected, I mean a wife, that’s good, right? Everyone thinks you’re straight anyways –”
“Stop.” Ilya doesn’t mean to sound so loud, so angry, but he’s been through too much in the last twenty minutes to modulate, especially in English, “We talked about this. We had a plan. I would not marry Svetlana.” Because I want to marry you, says the little secret voice inside of him that’s only recently gotten permission to be loud in his head.
Shane huffs, adorably annoyed, “Ilya, marry Svetlana. For your niece. You might not be in love with her, but you do love her, don’t you?”

Summary
Shane Hollander deserves so much better than Ilya Rosanov, in Ilya's personal opinion. But he has never been good at letting go of the things he wants, even to protect those things. As he is laying in bed after fucking Shane in Vegas he finally accepts that he love Shane and does not want to let him go no matter how much better he derseves. He vows to try his best to be worthy of Shane. He knows he can't tell Shane how he feels right now for fear of spooking him but he will spend however long it takes to earn him back and show that he returns the love Shane so clearly has for him.
Shane is hurt after Ilya ghosts him. Sleeping with him is Vegas all but proves what Shane has been thinking since the Olympics, he is invested in a man who does not and maybe can not love him. He loves Ilya Rozanov, this is bad. Ilya deserves someone better than Shane but Shane is selfish and will continue to take as much as Ilya can give, even if it is only sex. what he can get until then, but only if he can stop loving him and asking for more than can be given. He has a solution, an old witch friend of his that specializes in breaking emotional attachments. He can get rid of his love for Ilya and just enjoy the sex, like Ilya is doing.
