Maybe he never killed anyone, but that didn't undo all the kind-of-fucked-up shit he actually was guilty of in his life, as much as he’d like to forget it, and it didn't negate the noxious stream of thoughts that went through his head every single day, each one more dark and twisted than the last.
Thoughts that poisoned his heart and pumped blackness through his veins, reaching every last part of him. Thoughts about hurting himself, about hurting others, twitching constantly in his fingers.
“I could push you off,” Saihara’s mouth opened before he could stop it, and to his own horror, he continued, “I think you would die.”

Momota’s shirt is damp with sweat, and it’s way too hot to be embracing really, but still, Momota leans back into him, eyes slightly narrowed as he uses a trowel to brush the soil away from a particularly gnarly-looking root ball.
“That’s a big one,” Ouma remarks.
“Yeah, it is. I’ve been workin’ on it for about half an hour,” Momota utters. His gaze is intent, lips slightly pursed as he keeps at it with his trowel. It had surprised Ouma how much Momota took to things like this. Since they moved into this house about a month ago, Momota’s been taking on most of the chores, from the cooking and cleaning to the more strenuous stuff, like carrying around furniture and working in the yard on a 35℃ summer day. It’s not like Ouma wants him to be doing all that stuff either—Ouma isn’t useless, he can pull his weight at least as far as the damn dishes are concerned, Momota—but there is something about simply getting to watch him do it that’s… at the risk of sounding gay, kind of nice.

“I’m not whining!” Momota protests.
“Thank you, space man,” Ouma says dryly, “for focusing on the one word in that sentence that didn’t matter.”
Momota doesn’t appear to have anything to say to that, so Ouma continues, rolling his eyes.

Or so Kaito thought, until the hangar.
After that, well...it’s hard to think of someone the same way when you know the exact color of their blood when it pools under your feet, the way their breathing turns shallow as they sweat out against a slow acting poison, the way they smile ruefully up at you with both of your inevitable deaths looming over your heads.
Yeah, that’s bound to change your perspective just a little bit.

He follows his ears to Gonta’s lab, where the sound of screaming is loud enough—though muffled through the closed door—that Kaito can identify it. Kokichi. As much as Kaito is confused by the guy, he doesn’t hesitate even knowing who it is, rushing up to the door and grabbing the handle. He moves so quickly that he doesn’t even stop to process the low buzzing sound that sneaks through the wood under Kokichi’s screams, not until the’s opened the door and been faced with a swarm of insects.
“Gah—what the fuck?!” Kaito lifts a forearm to shield his eyes. He likes bugs alright, but too much is just too much. “Ouma, what’s going on?”
Kokichi, worryingly, does not respond. In fact, he doesn’t even scream. When Kaito squints through the cloud, he can make out vague shapes that he thinks might be Kokichi—curled up on the ground with his arms over his head—and Gonta, standing off to the side and interacting pleasantly with the insects. Kaito looks between them, then pulls his shirt over his nose and mouth to move towards Kokichi.

“I’ll take the prize. And you can tell Tsumugi that I’ll be staying here with Kokichi Ouma from now on,” Shuichi retorts, hissing out Tsumugi’s name with disgust, already walking down the stairs.Ceasing his next step, Shuichi mutters, “Oh, and you can tell her that whatever it is she’s planning...”
He turns back around, staring daggers at the nurse, as if she is Tsumugi, “I won’t let her win.”
Shuichi awakens and finds the outside world waiting for him. Now, after saddling himself with caring and living with a physically disabled and rather troubled Kokichi Ouma, he's learning how to live in a world that treats him like an international celebrity, planning teary reunion parties, all while investigating Team Danganronpa's new secret plans.Oh, and he's dealing with the fact that he may be painfully in love with his impromptu roommate.

Ouma didn’t really understand what that meant. Home, he supposed, was a place of safety, warmth and love. Home… was a place where one could be themselves, a place where lies—kind white lies and painfully black untruths—were simply unnecessary. Home was a place Ouma has never known, an alien concept, something he couldn’t quite understand. But the more he thought about it, the more he realized his detachment to the idea made a strange sort of sense.

“Ouma?”
There’s shuffling somewhere nearby, the mattress dipping under the new weight. Kokichi’s eyes snap open, alert and wide awake, and he blinks a few times trying to adjust to the darkness.
“Momota-chan really can’t live without me, huh?” he teases, but his voice feels strangely flat in this big, obnoxiously white room. He shifts a little, rolling onto his back to see Kaito better.
Not for the first time since leaving the game, he notes just how deflated Kaito looks, a mere shadow of the person he was back in the simulation. His hair lies flat against his face without copious amounts of gel and his eyes lack their usual spark as he leans closer, invading Kokichi’s personal space.
“Apparently I can’t,” Kaito says quietly and Kokichi closes his eyes and chuckles like it’s some kind of inside joke only the two of them are privy to.

Kaito hates Kokichi… but he hates the killing game even more. In the cold, cavernous Exisal hangar, Kaito stares into the poison-fevered eyes of the Ultimate Supreme Leader and makes a decision: the killing game is over. He will not kill Kokichi. He will not drop the press and entomb this child inside the killing game he claims to despise. So, Kaito comes up with a plan to save Kokichi’s life, but to pull it off, the two of them will have to work together inside the Exisal, trick Monokuma into reaching a false verdict, and end the class trial before Kokichi succumbs to the Strike-9 poison.

Summary
Off to his left, the elevator dings and the doors hiss as they slide open, and Momota looks up automatically, then lowers his gaze when he doesn’t immediately see anybody at his eye level.
Upon doing so, Momota glimpses dark purple locks, shiny but unruly, and does a double take, blinking and releasing the door so that he can rub his eyes with the back of his sleeve.
When he looks up again, Ouma is still there, carefully wheeling himself-- because he’s in a wheelchair-- out of the elevator, his jaw set in a grimace. Momota’s not necessarily surprised by the display of emotion-- he’d seen Ouma wearing plenty more back during the simulation, when they were in the hangar together-- but it’s still an unfamiliar look when Momota only ever tries to remember him smiling.
