Arthur doesn’t always treat him like he’s precious. He gives him impossible task to do, he throws things at Merlin, never stops to rest while they’re horse riding. He wakes him up at all hours of the night and even puts Merlin into head locks.
But those very same days, Arthur touches him so gently, Not only are his fingers gentle, but his eyes. It makes Merlin feel… beautiful.
Merlin is always the one to look away first.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me?” Arthur asks. For a few seconds, the silence feels like it heralds the rolling thunder—an incoming storm, so destructive it will tear down the castle. Then Merlin grins, and it’s a soft, forlorn little thing, and the thunder never comes.
“Sometimes,” he says, very, very quietly, in a way that Arthur didn’t know Merlin could sound like, “it turns out that fear is a little bit stronger than love.”
