Summary
Ryland looked down at his clipboard, where he had written a reasonable script, supplied earlier that day by Adrian. Unfortunately, the moment his eyes landed on the words, his brain supplied only terrible ways to say them.
He chose the worst one.
“I need flowers with prominent reproductive structures.”
The man went completely still.
Ryland could feel his soul attempting to leave his body.
“For a plant anatomy lab,” he added quickly. “For my students. Middle school students. Not–” He cut himself off, because there was simply no end to that sentence that would improve his situation. Instead, he just weakly smiled, and added “Science.”

Ryland Grace is brilliant with biology, awkward with adults, and far too invested in giving his students the lessons they deserve. Simon Fleischer is a guarded florist who trusts plants more than people and has no interest in being needed by anyone again. But when a forgotten school lab brings Ryland into Root & Thorn, their lives begin to tangle in quiet, unexpected ways – through flowers, roots, and the terrifying possibility of being cared for properly.

Summary
Grace had tried multiple times to extend the olive branch, often with gifts to sweeten the deal, only to be turned away or ignored completely. Truth be told, he was losing sleep over it.
Grace knew it probably wasn't anything personal, but what his brain knew and what he felt were disconnected data. Different variables in a complex equation.

Summary
He pictured Simon behind him pressed all along his back, hot and heavy and breathing like he was barely holding himself together. Simon’s hand over his mouth. Grace wanted it so fucking bad. He wanted Simon wound past thinking, past all that restraint. Wanted Simon’s teeth at his neck and Simon’s hand low on his stomach, holding him still while Grace fell apart against him. He wanted Simon making those broken growling sounds into his skin like Grace was prey, or food, or home, or some fucked-up fourth thing Grace didn’t have a word for.
Grace’s knees bent; he was barely standing.
He bit down on his lip to keep quiet and pushed his fingers deeper.
A low breath came from in front of him.
“Grace.”
His eyes snapped open.
Shit.
(For those of you scrolling with your phone in one hand and morals in the other the smut starts in the chapter titled “under the jaw”)

Summary
Simon and Ryland Grace were dead before they had been sent on their prospective missions, bothgiven the allusion of a choice they were never allowed to make in the first place. There had only ever been one option for both of them; do your missions and choke on it.
Neither was supposed to be alive. Technically neither of them were, not on paper.
Grace is built of scraps of memories stitched together with massive holes that needed patching, but with kindness pouring out of him like water.
Simon is made of calcified soil, hard packed and sturdy as iron, walls erected to keep it all in, to keep it all safe.
Water can be a corrosive thing, a dangerous thing, a suffocating thing.
But in the right hands, it can create a garden.Bookmarked by OctogonalOctopi

A voice comes through the speaker, asking if he needs help.
He does. He does need help. But he doesn't remember why.
Everything hurts. But he must reply. This is his only chance.
