    Summary

The Hail Mary has been shot out into the depths of the infinite void of space to search for an answer that may not even be there. Aboard, the three crew members lay in stasis as the ship hurtles like an arrow towards a distant star, with no hope of return, but a desperate hope to make things right.

At home, two brothers are left in sudden and violent grief. A woman grapples with whether or not she made the right decision. The world strains and suffers under the weight of the coming Fimbulwinter.

And then one of the beetles returns.

    Thirteen years early.

    Bookmarker's Notes

A poem?” she had said, an eyebrow pointedly raised as she stood in the entrance to the lab. Ryland had suggested the idea, and as much as she loved the man (she didn’t want to think about that too closely), that was a little ridiculous. “You want us to read poetry if we receive the news of our inevitable extinction?”

“Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,” Ryland recited from memory, not looking away from the lenses of his microscope, “and learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, do not go gentle into that good night.”

Eva’s breath snagged in her throat.

“Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight,” Ryland continued, unfazed by the silence—and not noticing that the team had turned to stare and gawk at him, “blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, rage—“ and here he turned his head and looked her in the eyes, the most serious she had ever seen him, “—rage against the dying of the light.”

She couldn’t breathe properly for the rest of the day, mind looping his voice reciting that poem.

The capsule touches down on Erid about a decade and a half after I do.

There's a message inside translated into fourteen different languages. Y'know, just in case I've taught myself - and then the Eridians - Afrikaans.

Hey, it reads. Can we have our ball back, please?

    Summary

A little over thirteen years after the Hail Mary launch, Eva Stratt is released from prison to assist the world’s bickering space agencies after a junior NASA technician spots an unidentified object near the orbit of Neptune. It appears to be on a direct collision course with Earth, and is moving so quickly it does not appear to be affected by any local gravitational forces, not even that of Sol. Oh, and one more thing—it seems to be slowing down.

    OR

Captain Dr. Ryland Grace pilots the Hail Mary home long before (and long, long after) its mission is supposed to be complete. In their desperate venture beyond their solar system, humanity may have just accidentally unlocked a new chapter in interstellar physics.
