When Arthur finds out about Merlin’s magic, he banishes him on the spot and sends him back to Ealdor. Well, at least that’s what everybody thinks.
The truth is that Arthur just wants Merlin to be safe, and far away from Camelot, where Uther is becoming more and more ruthless. So, he secretly asks Gwaine to go back to Ealdor with Merlin, to keep an eye on him and make sure he is all right.

Gwaine was just looking forward to spending his spring nights at the tavern, flirting and drinking ale. Instead he now has to juggle between a heartbroken, besotted, overdramatic warlock, and a stubborn, protective, and emotionally constipated prince. Just his luck.
